Argumentation Essay

This assignment asks you to write a paper with an argument and support it with reasons and concrete examples (evidence) using the directions in the steps below. This assignment is a research assignment. The paper should have an argumentative thesis; it should not merely provide information on the issue, but take a stand on the issue. You must do a limited amount of formal research, and you will need to cite and document this material as source(s). 

Step 1: Choose your topic and read the assigned pages and essays listed below it. The essays below represent differing perspectives on the issue to give you some context of the argument surrounding the topic. You may not deviate from the topics below as this will result in failure of the assignment.

Step 2: Think about your own position on the issue.

How did you respond to the two essays you read. Think about the essay you would write based on your own position and how you would support that position, keeping in mind that you need your argument to appeal to those who might have differing or opposing perspectives than your own.

Step 3: Draft an outline of the essay.

Step 4: Do your research on the topic and find your sources.

Log in to the Troy Library’s Databases and find 2 other sources on your topic you will use in your essay. (Note: Abstracts for articles are not the same as articles and should not be used as sources in your paper. You will need to use quotations from the full article in your paper.)

Think about your outline and where you can use support and evidence for the reasons you have in your outline. MAKE SURE TO DOWNLOAD AND SAVE THE SOURCES YOU CHOOSE IN FILES (.pdf format whenever possible). You will need these files when you submit your paper. They will be the copies of your sources you are required to upload to the drop box labeled “Copies of Sources for Research Paper.”

Step 5: Write your rough draft, making sure to incorporate your sources appropriately using MLA Style for citation in the body of your paper and documentation in your Works Cited page.

Your sources must be incorporated as DIRECT QUOTATIONS--not mere paraphrases-that are cited correctly. Failure to use direct quotations will result in grade deductions.

Step 6: Submit your rough draft by the deadline listed below.
