 DESIGN BRIEF 

A structural engineering consultancy has been employed to carry out a structural design for RIBA stage 3. You has been asked by the client to produce a structural design for a new three-storey residential building in London. The structure will be a steel-framed building with concrete floor slabs as shown in Figure 1. The Architect has specified that the structural zone is limited to a maximum of 800 mm in order to achieve the required floor-to-ceiling height of 2.8 m, allow for a tolerance and deflection zone of 150 mm and a service zone of 300 mm. There is no requirement for screed on top of the slab. 

The long beam span can be taken as 9250 mm while the short beam span can be taken as 4375 mm. 

TASK

1. Determine the load path throughout the structure and provide a load take down of the structure from top to foundation level. 6 marks 

2. Design a primary beam at the first floor level. 8 marks 

3. Design a column at ground floor level. 8 marks 

4. Design a beam-to-column connection at first-floor level. 8 marks 

5. Provide a General Arrangement (GA) drawing for a typical floor in scale. The drawings are structural engineers’ drawings and it should indicate all structural elements and necessary information required. 

6. Provide a detailed drawing of the steel connection designed in Task 4. 7 marks 

7. The Architect now wants to create a large lobby space at the entrance of the building, with no internal columns. What structural systems would be required to achieve this?
