Assignment 1:
You must use one of these bodies of theory from the course, you cannot use any other theory from your other courses or research. Doing so your assignment will be deemed not to have fulfilled the basic requirements and so will not pass.
In the assessment process for Assignment #1 we will be looking at: 
1. Structure 
• To structure your writing in a way that is clear and helps the reader follow your argument. 
• To provide relevant information on the management practice that you have chosen for your empirical material. 
• To provide comprehensive, appropriate and connected sets of ideas that flow together well. 
• To provide accurate references (e.g. Harvard style, number of journals such as web-based or other published materials). 
2. Knowledge 
• Explain the chosen theory and theoretical concepts accurately. 
• Show good evidence of understanding of key ideas, concepts, definitions, etc. from a thorough review of relevant literature. 
3. Application 
• Explain how the theory and theoretical concepts are applied to your chosen excerpt of secondary data 
• Provide detailed accounts of how ideas/concepts either explain what is or what should be going on in the managerial situation you describe. 
4. Analysis 
• Excellent linkage of chosen theory and practice 
• Provide a well-reasoned argument 
If your empirical data for assignment #1 is based around a film clip or similar then a transcript should be provided in an appendix, which will not count towards the 1,500-word limit. However, you may wish to take excerpts from the transcript and use these in the main body of the assignment. Such excerpts would constitute part of your word count. 

The following information should help with any more general questions about the assignment: 

A. Where might you find your data? You could use a case study or documentary, interview, radio broadcast, podcast, film or TV program. You can also simply Google ‘free case studies’, ‘management case studies’ or ‘leadership case studies’, etc. There are many free case studies available online.

B. How much data is enough data? Anything from a few paragraphs to a few pages. Anything longer than the Apple case study (from the Complexity Theory tutorial) would likely be too much data for you to analyze in the time allowed. 
IF you were using a published case (or an excerpt from one) as your empirical material, then you might want to include that as an appendix because it would be a large document. You may, however, want to include some shorter sections/quotes in the main body of the report. Equally, however, you might choose a short extract of interview data, a transcript of a meeting or interaction, or any other account of managerial practice. If this runs to a few hundred of the 1,500 words available then you might not feel the need for an appendix.
 
C. How are you going to present your data? We expect relevant data excerpts to be included and analyzed within the main body of the text. As above, if you feel it is necessary, then you can then include the full case study/interview transcript, etc. as an appendix.
 
D. Where might you get more information on your chosen body of theory? You might start with Google Scholar, before moving on to Business Source Premier or ScienceDirect. 

E. How might you analyze this data? For this first assignment, we’re not looking for highly sophisticated data analysis. Your chosen body of theory will give you an idea of what you should be looking out for in your data. For example, if you are considering institutional theory, then you are likely to be looking out for instances of regulative, normative, and cultural-cognitive rules, and considering how these constrain or assist those within an organization. The data might also help you illustrate how legitimacy is achieved and maintained by organizations. 
You may find it easiest to print out your data (or a transcript of this) and highlight phrases or situations that could be understood via the conceptual lenses (or just plain old ideas!) of your chosen theory. You can then start to explore the relationships between these, e.g. Health and Safety regulations might lead to managerial frustration, but to ignore them would threaten the survival of the organization. This is just a very simple example to get you thinking. 

F. How might you structure your assignment? The assignment might include the following elements, but we’re not looking for every assignment to be identical: Introduction – introduce the aim/argument of the piece, which will analyze X [management practice] through the application of Y [theory/concept], revealing Z [findings]. Explanation of theory and chosen concept(s)/categories – show you haven’t just picked up and accepted one definition – read around the theory and its applications. Explanation of the chosen area of management practice Introduction of the data and its relevance to the area of management practice Analysis - Presentation and analysis of excerpts of data (you might structure this by including a subheading for each of your theoretical concepts). Findings - what has the theory allowed us to understand that we didn’t understand before? Conclusion – a brief summation of the preceding application of theory to the secondary data, and the findings
