Assignment overview

This folio is a complex task and requires you to develop a resource folio to enhance your understanding of teaching the creative arts and literacy within Australian early childhood education contexts. You will demonstrate your understanding of how the creative arts and literacy experiences enhance children’s learning opportunities.

Rationale

This assignment aims to develop your skills as pre-service teacher and a reflective practitioner as you demonstrate your understanding of planning, delivering and evaluating children’s learning and development within literacy and the creative arts.

To do this, you will create an authentic folio which demonstrates your understanding of planning creative arts and literacy experiences for children aged 0 to 5-years old within early childhood education settings.

Your analysis will explore and evaluate how each learning experience will foster children’s creativity, imagination, self-expression, learning and development within each area, each analysis will have strong academic underpinning throughout all sections.

Assignment details

In this assignment you will create a teaching philosophy which outlines key teaching pedagogical approaches and strategies you will use with children throughout your teaching journey, you will then compile ten (10) learning experiences for each of the creative arts areas and literacy for zero- to two-year-olds and three- to five-year-olds.

Part A: Teaching Philosophy

Teaching children requires continuous reflective practices on our knowledge, teaching practices and current academic literature.
For the first section of your assignment, you will create a statement around your teaching philosophy. A teaching philosophy is the key pedagogies, values and beliefs that you hold as an educator in relation to teaching children aged zero to five (0–5) years old. Your teaching philosophy will be a continual work in progress as your move throughout the degree and your career as an Early Childhood Teacher. Support the pedagogical approaches that resonate with your teaching philosophy with academic literature.

Consider:

• What are your views on how children aged 0–5 years old learn?

• What theoretical approaches resonate with your teaching style (supported by academic literature)?

• How do you think you should engage with children in relation to teaching and learning?

• What are your views on engaging educators and families within the service?

Part B: Folio 

You will create a folio with a total of ten learning experiences that can be used for zero to two (0–2) years and three to five year olds within the areas of the creative arts and literacy. You will need to provide a rationale, appropriate links to the EYLF and/or state/territory equivalent curriculum, and an analysis of how the learning experience aims to support children’s learning and development for each area. This will be closely linked to children’s developmental domains. Your analysis must be supported by academic literature to demonstrate your understanding of teaching the creative arts and literacy.

You will create two (2) learning experiences for each of the listed creative arts and literacy areas. For each area, one learning experience must be included for zero to two year-old children, and the other must be for three to five  year-old children.

The creative arts and literacy areas listed will be referred to as ‘areas’ within the criteria and throughout this assignment:

• Visual Arts

• Dramatic Play

• Music

• Dance

• Literacy

For each learning experience, you need to include:

• Rationale – approximately 1–2 sentences

• Links to the EYLF and/or state equivalent ACECQA-approved curriculum document

• Analysis of how the learning experience will help children’s learning and development should also link to at least one (1) developmental domain
