Steam Generator (Boiler):

A steam generator generates steam at the desired rate, desired pressure and temperature by burning fuel in its furnace. It is a complex integration of furnace, superheater, reheater, boiler or evaporator, economizer, air preheater along with various auxiliaries such as pulverizers, burners, fans, stokers, dust cllectors and precipitators, ash handling equipments and chimney or stack. The boiler or evaporator is actually a part of the steam generator where the phase change from liquid water to vapour or the boiling occurs essentially at constant pressure and temperature. However, the term 'boiler is traditionally used to mean the whole steam generator. The generated steam is used to generate power in steam engines or steam turbines, cater the need of various industries e.g. sugar, paper, jute, textile etc. Or this steam may also be used in cold weather for human comfort.

Classification of Boilers:

The boilers may be classified as follows:

1. Vertical and Horizontal boilers: If the axis of the boiler is horizontal, the boiler is called as horizontal boiler. Examples: Lancashire boiler, Babcock and Wilcox boiler. If the axis of the boiler is vertical, it is called vertical boiler. Examples: Simple vertical boiler and Cochran boiler. The parts of a horizontal boiler can be inspected and repaired easily but it occupies more space. The vertical boiler occupies less floor area.

2. Fire tube and water tube boiler: In the fire tube boilers, the hot gases are inside the tubes and the water surrounds the tubes. Examples: Cochran, Lancashire and Locomotive boilers.
