The goal is to write a report in the style of an academic article, using data from the MaML (Media as Missing Link) dataset, which we have also used in-class several times. There are two documents on Canvas in the Research Report folder that will help you deal with this data. One describes the variables, the other contains the codebook used for manual coding. What you need to do with this data, is of course fully dependent on the research question.

The datasets themselves are not yet available throught Canvas, since you can request data from me. There is manually coded data available for four different countries (Belgium, Denmark, The Netherlands and Norway), from which you can choose one. Data is available from 2000 until 2017.

You are required to make use of the manually coded data (codes.nonDomestic and/or codes.majorTopic), and test the performance of your approach using a confusion matrix and performance estimators such as the accuracy or F1-score. There are two ways to do this, either you use the topic codes to construct dictionaries for the topics of interest, or you train a Naïve Bayes classifier. In both cases, you will need to have a validation and test set, as you either need to validate what features to use for Naïve Bayes, or how many words to use in your dictionary, before testing the performance of your final dictionary/model. Once you have a final model/dictionary, you will use this on a second dataset (without topic classifications) to answer the research question. This second dataset will only contain the time period you indicate in the research question. The first dataset will contain manually coded data from the entire period (2000-2017).
