In Week 6 we look at drug policy and policy responses; we have also looked at examples of these throughout the unit, and will continue to do so. We have seen changes to how we view various substances and why they are used, and by whom. We have seen changes in response to those changes. While some of our changes are in response to the harms that are related to substance use (e.g. making a substance illegal when it was previously legal), we have seen that often times these changes create new harms (new substances that emerge to circumvent these new laws). On the other hand, we see that some changes should be made, but are not (e.g. making tobacco illegal), for various reasons (e.g. social, cultural, political, etc).

For this assessment, you are to write an evidence-based argument for a policy response that you want to see. Some examples might be:

• legalising all substances which are currently illegal
• making tobacco illegal
• making alcohol a substance available by prescription only
• to allow drug checking/pill testing services
• introduction of a minimum price for alcohol
• a medically supervised injecting site
• the legalisation of cannabis
• the introduction of prescription heroin.

You can choose one of those, or you can choose something else that you are interested in. You can choose something that's in between what I have suggested above (e.g. decriminalise, but not legalise, substances which are currently illegal). However, there should be an evidence-based argument that your work draws upon. Furthermore, your work should focus on a harm that currently exists, and for which the change you want to see will address or alleviate. For example, if MDMA potentially contributes to harms such as fatalities caused by unknown contaminants, then the change could be the introduction of pill testing/drug checking services, or it could be legalising MDMA so that it becomes a regulated product (much like alcohol is). 

The harm does not have to be a health harm; rather, it can be a social or legal harm. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' choice of harm and the policy response you want to see regarding this harm. Rather, like with AT1, it is how well you argue for your choice. It's also not about identifying a specific policy/law per se, it's essentially about saying "here is a harm, and here is a change I would like to see to reduce this harm." 

1. Harm: A clear explanation, justification, and discussion of the chosen harm should be given. The audience should understand why this harm was chosen, and the urgency/importance with which the harm should be addressed.
2. The policy change: A clear explanation, justification, and discussion of the policy change that is needed to address the chosen harm. The audience should be persuaded by examples provided and the evidence presented that by making the change, there would be a reduction in the harm that is identified.
3. Professionalism of writing and presentation: The assignment should be carefully edited, with no mistakes in your spelling, punctuation, syntax or grammar. Careful presentation of your wok is important to ensure accurate communication with the reader. Individual statements should be clearly articulated and sentences well-constructed and unambiguous. This allows the reader to focus on the meaning and the key messages of your arguments. The style of writing should be appropriate for an academic audience
4. Referencing: Referencing of source material allows the reader to assess how persuasive and credible your arguments are and builds the readerâs confidence that your arguments are based on evidence and not just anecdote or your own assumptions. Citations should be appropriately located in the text and fully detailed in a reference list, in a consistent and correct format (Harvard or APA).

A further component of this assessment (though it is not included in the word count, nor does it receive any marks) is self-assessment. This is the same as the process outlined in AT1.
