INTRODUCTION

IORs are created because each organisation lacks the ability to go it alone. The organisation(s) in the relationship provide something that the rest of the other organisations lack. Though promising much, IORs are fraught with difficulties such as conflict, trust, opportunistic behaviour, control, autonomy, competition and goal incongruence.

In this chapter, we will examine key principles and concepts relating to IORs and sport development. First, we examine the theory relating to IORs, using relevant sport examples to demonstrate the importance of IORs in SD and SFD. Then we present two case studies that further demonstrate the theory in application before summarising the key points. After completing this chapter, you should be able to:

• understand the key theoretical concepts of IORs and social network analysis;
• understand why organisations form IORs;
• identify different forms of IORs;
• understand why IORs are essential for sport development delivery and outcomes; and
• discuss the benefits and risks of developing IORs in SD and SFD programs and organisations.
