Survey for Determining the Proportion of Frequent Uber Users at UTM - Statistics Assessment Answer

Assessment Task:

Target population: All UTM Students
Survey focus: The primary focus of our study is to estimate the proportion of UTM students, who use Uber rarely (0 to 1 times a week), moderately (2 to 3 times a week), and frequently (more than 4 times a week). The secondary focus would be to analyze the proportion of people who have similar preferences when using the app (i.e. the proportion of people that use UberX relative to Pool or Express Pool).
Sampling frame: The participants for our survey will be students from both STA304 lectures, who we plan on reaching out to through email and in-person during class. We will have two sampling frames in order to maximize our response rate. The first sampling frame will be all students who attend lectures 101 and 102 on a specific day in October.  The second sampling frame would be a list of STA304 student emails provided to us by the course instructor or teaching assistants. We feel that the second sampling frame would allow us to reach out to students, who are unable to attend or come late to lecture. To ensure that the same person does not respond twice (in lecture and via email), we are asking all students in a lecture to provide UofT email addresses and we will be omitting duplicate respondents from our data.
Sample size: The participants for our survey will be from both STA304 lectures, which at the moment has around 250 students collectively. Since not all students would have consented to participate in the survey, we are aiming for a sample size of at least 200.
Sampling method: Given that our population consists of just students, we are assuming that it is homogenous and carrying out the simple random sampling method for our survey.
Data collection methodology: In order to estimate the proportion of UTM students that frequently use the Uber app, we are asking all survey participants to complete questionnaires with closed-ended questions during the lecture or through email response. We found that questionnaires are the most effective means of eliciting information, provided that it is well formulated and the respondent fills it properly. A copy of the questionnaire can be found in Appendix C. We will be providing students with a QR code, which directs them to an online questionnaire so that they can answer them using their laptop or phone. Once questionnaires are complete, we plan on using Excel and RStudio to summarize our data and draw conclusions based on calculations.
Sophisticated methodologies used: Once our data has been collected, we intend on making adjustments for non-response. We understand that there is a possibility that our questionnaire may not be fully completed by all participants and that there may be holes in our data collection due to lack of response. As a result, we plan to counter the inaccuracies through post-stratification weighting, where the responses of certain participants (i.e. those that have actually used Uber) will be weighed with greater relative influence when making estimations.
