Introduction - As a technology that is used almost every day by large populations of people, knowing how ‘accurate’ GNSS data is important in understanding how it is used, and how it sometimes shouldn’t be used! For this assignment, you will be reviewing a large GNSS dataset, and examining how it presents over different periods of time. You will:
1. Prepare plots of the dataset provided to you- “Assignment 2 data.xls” in appropriate formats
2. Undertake a statistical analysis of a GNSS dataset that is provided to you
3. Comment on the findings of your statistical analysis. The dataset contains 7 columns:
1. Count – the observation number
2. UTC – the time the data was collected in UTC time zone
3. PDOP – the positional dilution of precision value for the observation
4. SVs used – the number of satellites being tracked at the time of collection of the observation
5. Lat – the latitude of the observation in decimal degrees 6. Lon - the longitude of the observation in decimal degrees
7. Height – the height of the observation above the ellipsoid Note: This is a LARGE dataset – do not attempt to print it out!
Question 1 Using the provided file “Assignment 2 data.xls” Excel, Google sheets or a similar spreadsheet package, determine the mean, variance and standard deviation for the Latitude, Longitude and Heights for:
a. The whole dataset
b. The last 30 consecutive points
Question 2 Prepare one (1) plot showing and contrasting (use one colour for a and another colour for b) the horizontal position (latitude and longitude) for:
a. all the points in the dataset at an appropriate scale
b. the 30 consecutive points in the subset used in 1b.
Question 3 Prepare one (1) plot showing and contrasting the height for: a. all the points in the dataset at an appropriate scale
b. the 30 consecutive points in the subset used in 1b.
Question 4 Prepare brief commentary on your analysis and results.
a. how the whole dataset and the 30 consecutive point subset compared in both horizontal position (Latitude and Longitude) and height,
b. how having different numbers of observations in a subset might influence the statistical results
c. any identified issues with the dataset, and how you might address these if you had to repeat questions 1 to 3.
