Critically examine the concept ‘social location’, applying it to your own self. Reflect on your personal experiences, identifying the impact of social divisions (gender, age, sexuality, ethnicity, health etc.) upon you. Critically consider the importance of an awareness of social location in social work, noting how yours may impact upon your practice.

Task

• This is a reflective piece of work synthesising your personal experiences and location with sociological theory.
• Introduce and define key terms and concepts – eg. social location, inequality, division etc and how you categorise your ‘social location’.
• Apply sociological theories to analyse your ‘social identity’ and how it has evolved (eg functionalism, feminism, social constructionism, labelling theory etc) .
• Use sociological theories/concepts to consider oppressions or discrimination you may or could face as a result of your social location and how your location may advantage you vis a vis others.
• Choose personal experiences to illuminate and support your discussion of social location and social inequality.
• Discuss how recognising the social location of those using services can be useful in social work.
• Conclude considering how this reflection and analysis will help you in future in the context of anti-discrimination, anti-racist and anti-oppressive practice i.e. the role of self and self-awareness.
• Ensure your power point is visually appealing. Ensure you evidence your understanding of sociology and social theory within your recorded discussion.
