There are three pieces of assessment for this unit.

• The first involves identifying and articulating a critical incident from your practice within an organisation. This will then be presented to your tutorial group, who will act as peer mentors to assist you to critically reflect on your critical incident (using Fook’s 2016 model of critical reflection). The first piece of assessment involves working collaboratively with other tutorial members, but is assessed individually.
• The second will be a major critically reflective analysis, involving systematically researching your practice using deconstruction and reconstruction methods to inductively generate new theories from your practice about working in human service organisations. This second piece of assessment is also individually assessed.
• The third piece of assessment occurs during tutorial classes and requires you to demonstrate your capacity to formulate and articulate appropriate critical reflection (i.e deconstruction and reconstruction) questions when you act in a peer supervisory capacity for fellow students during their critical incident presentations (i.e the practice of using critical postmodern theory to craft critically reflection questions).

Each assessment item is designed to measure your ability to apply the knowledge and skills states in the unit learning outcomes.

The unit has formative and summative assessment pieces.

Assessment 1: Presentation (oral individual) Critical incident presentation

This learning/assessment task requires you to identify and present a critical incident that occurred within an organisation in which you have worked (ideally your from your placement or other human services organisation). The presentation to your tutorial group is an opportunity to gain feedback on your critical incident and generate multiple perspectives. This critical incident will need to be significant to you, given that it will form the major basis of your learning about group, team and community work. Some of the reasons for the significance of this incident may include: that you would like to learn more about it; you felt challenged by it; you would like to improve your practice in this area; it presented some dilemmas for you; you would like to change in some way; and/or you thought you did it particularly well.

The presentation should include a description of the critical incident (with as much concrete and specific details as possible) as well as the context (relevant background information) in which the critical incident occurred. You should also include your initial reflective analysis of the incident. Some questions that may help with your initial reflections include:

• Why did I choose this incident?
• Why is is it critical for me?
• How do I feel about it now?
• What do I hope to learn by reflecting on it?
• What aspects will I focus on in the second assignment?
• How will this link to the relevant unit materials on working in human service organisations and critical theoretical perspectives?

The guidelines for critical reflection as exemplified by Fook (2016) in your set  text have some additional questions that will be useful (See chapter 7). A focus of the presentation should be to elicit feedback and reflection from tutorial group members. You should think of imaginative ways in which to present your material, particularly methods that involve the class and encourage them to help you critically reflect. You will need to be succinct. Your presentation will be approximately 20 minutes (7  minutes to present your story, and the remaining time to elicit and respond to reflective questions generated by the class members. Your tutorial group will act as a peer supervision group for you, so you should choose an incident that maximise the type of feedback you would like and need to assist with learning/assessment task 2.

It is recommended you prepare a one page handout to give to your tutorial members that includes a very brief account of relevant background/context information and succinct critical incident description (maximum 1 page).

More specific requirements for this task will be discussed further in the first two tutorials.

The presentation of your critical incident (and an initial critical reflection group discussion) will be assessed according to your ability to:

• identify an area of learning within the description of your critical incident relating to your practice in an organisation that you will subsequently critically analyse in depth

• demonstrate an openness and capacity for critical reflection through a willingness to expose your thinking about working in human service organisations to scrutiny and interrogate implicit assumptions and values embedded within it, in a group setting
• analyse your practice using critical theories and critical reflection processes
• demonstrate an understanding of the inextricable relationship between theory and practice in relation to the presentation of your critical incident

• identify further areas of learning associated with the specific incident that you have chosen to focus on
• demonstrate effective public speaking skills required for professional  practice within a human service organisation.
