Overview: 

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the latest computing evolution that incorporates billions of Internet connected devices that range from cameras, sensors, RFIDs, smart phones, and wearables, to smart meters, vehicles, medication pills, signs, and industrial machines. However, there is much mystery/confusion in the general public about what it actually is, what technologies are involved, and how an IoT system can be built. In this assignment, you will uncover answers to this problem and practice how to source for information to be presented inside a Survey Report. 

Part 1: What is IoT?  

I. Search online for several definitions (at least 4+) of what the Internet of Things is. II. Compare them and explain their differences. 

III. Write your own "better" definition that describes the Internet of Things. 

IV. Suggest 4 ways to increase awareness of what IoT can do or its benefits in the general public (mixture of professionals and laypeople). 

Part 2: Applications: 

 Popular areas of application include the following: 

Smart homes: health and safety monitoring for disabled and elderly people living alone. Pervasive identification and activity monitoring for national security. 

Remote sensing for periodic collection of samples in outdoor environments. 

Smart farming, including irrigation, fertilization, and crop assessment and recommendation. Advanced manufacturing, including process automation, inventory management, and Industry 4.0. 

Pick One Area and: 

I. Write the background of this area (what is it, what are the problems, why is it still a problem, etc.) (5%) 

II. Search for at least 4+ real world applications of IoT in this area (Can be products, experimental research, prototypes, patents, etc.). Describe each application's features, advantages and disadvantages. (20%) 

III. After reviewing all the applications, identify at least 3+ ideas for further improvement, missing features, or unsolved problems. (5%) 

Part 3: Preparing for Prototyping:  

I. Pick one point from 2.III, and briefly describe your proposed IoT solution using the IoT Architecture (Week 2 Lecture) to explain its core components. (10%) 

II. You plan to use a Raspberry Pi, Arduino, NodeMCU and XBee in your solution. For each of these components, do the following: (10% for each component) 

A. Describe what this component is, its different types and what can it be used for. B. Search for at least 3 different online guides/tutorials/sites that can teach you how to begin using it. 

C. Review each guide/tutorial/site and compare them (Ease of understanding, amount of detail/content/examples, additional links to learn more, etc.) 

D. Which guide/tutorial/site will you choose to use? Why?
