SWK201E Legal and Ethical Issues in Helping Professions Social Work Assessment Answer

Case Study

You are a social worker in a tertiary education institution providing counselling and guidance services to the students. Eliza, a student age 18, is seeing you for counselling over her identity and relationship problem. You have seen her for about three sessions and managed to develop a good rapport with her to openly discuss about her concerns.

During the last session, she revealed that she is very troubled lately as she has developed a liking for another girl Claudia in the same learning institution. However, Claudia does not share the same sexual orientation as Eliza and has rejected her. In spite of this, Eliza feels very jealous when she sees Claudia going out with other boys.

Eliza has come to see you for another session today. She shared that a week ago, she had decided to pursue Claudia again and confessed her liking of her. This however caused the situation to worsen as Claudia and her male friend openly chastised and ridiculed her in front of many other students. As such, Eliza was very affected by this incident. She was unable to sleep well and felt that life was meaningless. Eliza felt rather isolated as she did not have anyone to confide in.

You noticed that there were some lacerations on her arms and asked about the wounds. Eliza admitted that she had some fleeting thoughts of ending her life as she had difficulty coping with the emotional pain. She found that cutting herself helped to ease some of that pain. On seeing that you were concerned about her wounds, Eliza pleaded to you to keep the information confidential as she was not keen to let her parents know. She did not want them to worry about her. According to Eliza, her parents were not aware about her problems, and she believed that they were rather conservative and would not be able to understand nor accept her sexual orientation.
