Preparation It is anticipated that students will be working in the human services sector and/or have completed a field placement in a human services agency. You need to prepare a Scope Statement for a project idea that you create, so your choice of project concept is up to you. You are encouraged to develop your project ideas in the context of your work experience, but this is not mandatory. To keep this assignment manageable, is suggested that you design a project that is no more than 12 months in length; has a budget of up to $30,000; involves up to four community partners; and involves up to three project staff. The assignment only involves planning the project on paper - there is no expectation that the project will be implemented. Before starting this assignment, you will need to familiarise yourself with project management concepts such as objectives, deliverables, work breakdown structures, timelines and cost estimating. If you are currently working or volunteering in the human services or community organisations and you want to write your assignment with that context in mind, you will probably need to explore the relevance for your project ideas in your workplace or community groups – talk to your colleagues and peers about your ideas. The purpose of a scope statement is to mark out the scope of the project by delineating the context, methods, outcomes and deliverables, the scope of work, time and cost of the total project. This is important to do, because most projects require authorisation and sign off and such a document can be used to get agreement from key stakeholders such as functional management or funding sources. A scope statement also gives the project manager or person(s) who will go about delivering the project clear guidance on what they should be doing. Remember, the people designing the project are not always the ones who have to develop and implement it. In order to make sure that the project is implemented faithfully to the idea, a clear scope statement will help make sure your good ideas actually become reality. A good scope statement makes it clear to all involved what the 'rules' are when it comes to delivering and managing the project. It helps prevent projects becoming 'runaway' monsters or confusing messes, where peopled don't know what is going on.
