1. You work for a youth service and do outreach to the skate park every Thursday afternoon. Tyler has been coming most Thursday afternoons and you have gotten to know him very well and have a strong relationship with him.  He is a friendly young man, who does really well at sports in school where he is in grade 11, and is popular amongst a group of young people. As you are chatting together Tyler reveals that he has been kicked out of home after his parents found him smoking marijuana in his room. He has been staying at a friends place for the last two nights but they have said he can’t keep staying there and should go home. He feels that he cant do that because of the constant conflict with his parents, and says he will see if he can stay at another friends house tonight. He is concerned that if they follow through with their threats to tell the school he smokes marijuana that he will end up getting kicked out (the School has a no tolerance policy for drugs) and nowhere to live.
2. You work as a re-settlement support worker for a small migrant settlement service assisting people who have migrated to Australia. One of the most difficult problems that a lot of the people you are working with face, is being able to find employment. Many of the people you are working with have quite good verbal English language skills, and a broad range of qualifications and work experience in their country of origin. However many of them, individually and in the support group you are running, are raising concerns that they feel very discriminated against when applying for jobs. They also say they feel a sense of hopelessness after searching for employment for several months with no success.
3. You are a worker at Harmony, a service for LGBTIQ-identified people in a regional city.  Jorge is a 33-year old transgender man recently referred to your service for support after being harassed at work due to his gender identity/expression.  Jorge works as a vehicle service mechanic.  Jorge recently began presenting as a male full-time in the workplace.  However, Jorge's co-workers continue to call him by his birth name, Josephine, and refuse to eat lunch with him.  Before his gender re-assignment, Jorge had found working as a woman in the mechanic shop very difficult due to prolonged and serious sexual harassment.  Jorge finds the behaviour of his co-workers to be very distressing ad Jorge is having thoughts of extreme hopelessness and at times feels like ending it all.  
4. You are a new graduate social worker working in a busy public hospital in a regional city of Queensland. You are located in the orthopaedic ward and are responsible for having input into the discharge plan for patients. Mon is a 80 year old woman admitted to the Emergency department after a fall at home and was found to have a right fractured hip. She had a hip replacement but since the operation for her fracture, she has become confused and disoriented and currently incontinent. She wants to go home straight away and says she can manage. During her numerous past hospital admissions resulting from other falls, she has been offered services, such as home care and meals on wheels but has cancelled them once she returned home. You are concerned she doesn’t have the supports around her, but that she is too proud and independent to accept assistance. She is a war widow- her husband of 52 years died 2 years ago, and she has one adult child, Ron who lives interstate. She sees him every few months, and he has Enduring Power of Attorney. Mon’s main social support is her younger sister, Anne, who lives nearby but has been recently diagnosed with dementia, which is expected to impact on her more and more in coming years. They talk every day on the phone. Mon says Ron is putting pressure on her to sell the house and move into a nursing home. Mon says that’s not for her.
5. Joe and Julie and their baby boy Max aged 10 months have arrived at the NeoLives Community Centre in need of accommodation. You work there as a family worker and have been allocated to have initial contact with them. They have been living in their car for the past two weeks. Joe was retrenched from his job as a warehouse forklift driver two months ago after the company lost a large contract. Joe and Julie say they were unable to keep up the rent on their two bedroom apartment and decided to move out.  Originally they were going to drive to Sydney to stay with one of Julie’s brothers who they get on with. But the car broke down and they couldn’t afford to get it fixed. They say they are worried about Max as he has been vomiting the past two days and they think it would be good for him to see a doctor. After quite a long time talking with them about their concerns Joe and Julie reveal they are fearful of the involvement of Child Safety if they disclose their current situation to a doctor. When you ask what makes them think that Child Safety would want to take Max they say they have heard on TV and from other people that this can happen to people like them even if you are trying to be good parents.
