ABSTRACT - This report provides a secondary research analysis on challenges faced by women while living in social housing in Australia. A critical analysis has been done of various literature currently present in this regard to illuminating emergent theory which will prove to benefit the society and the people mainly women living in social housing in the country. The information provided herein provides that women or single older women living in Australia are at significant risk of becoming homeless or will be deprived of shelter in near future because there are significantly less social housing facilities and the number of applicants is increasing day by day. There is a history of research which relates to challenges faced by women in social housing.
This research report analyses this unprotected issue of challenges through feminist and human rights viewpoint lens. To get a better understanding of the issue, it is necessary first to understand the social housing culture in the country and how the women have inhabited it in their early years. At first, the social housing culture has explored in the research, which gives an idea that age and single status are the critical factors for women living in social housing. The report then explores the economic and social conditions which pose a challenge or a threat to women residing in social housing. The result of the complete analysis and research reveals the increase in demand for social housing facilities and limited supply of the same. The landscape of challenges faced by women is worsening gradually. This report suggests how these challenges will impact the economy and the policies to improve the situation of women in such households.
INTRODUCTION - This study explored the links between the current housing system and the problem faced by women who access social and affordable housing accommodation due to their experiences of domestic and family violence.
The literature on women accessing social and affordable housing identifies domestic violence and economic condition of the women as a contributor to women accessing social and affordable housing. Generally, housing is a basic need required for the development of a sense of control over circumstances, social identity and social status (Dunn and Hayes 2000).
One of the aims of the study was to analyses the issue of housing in the context of women who have experienced domestic violence in NSW who seek support and accommodation provided by the NSW Housing sector.
The specific research questions were:
What are the problems encountered by women in social housing in New South Wales: improving the housing and Socio-economic situation of Australian Women?
Literature Review - Recent research provides a variety of useful material about the current state of NSW social and affordable housing. In Australia, Social Housing defined as secure and affordable rental housing for people which consists of public housing, community housing, and indigenous (aboriginal) housing. The National Rental Affordability Scheme Regulations, 2020 was one of the programs which were formed by the Australian Government on April 01, 2020. These regulations replaced the 2008 regulations. According to these regulations, the people with low income will get incentives for up to 10 years which will increase the affordability of renting the households. Under these regulations, people with low income will get households at a price which is 20 times lower than the market price
