Scenario 1 – Chloe

As a school social worker, you have been asked by your social work supervisor to see Chloe, a girl aged 16 in Year 10 at Byron Bay High School. Her year teacher Mrs Grant has recommended that she see the school counsellor after several other girls have complained about her behaviour towards them. The girls think that she is too familiar with them and always wants to kiss and touch them inappropriately. They think that Chloe is very flamboyant and ‘just a bit over the top’. They have also told Mrs Grant that Chloe is often stoned and has offered to give them some cannabis if they want it. Chloe is an only child and her mother Rita has been separated from Chloe’s father for over ten years. Chloe has had no contact with her father during that time. Rita has suffered from fibromyalgia for several years, although it was a long time before it was diagnosed. She is often tired and in pain and initially Chloe doubted that there was anything wrong with her. Chloe acts as the main support for her mother and does a lot of the cooking and cleaning at home when Rita is in too much pain or just exhausted. Rita has tried a lot of pain relief medication without much success. Mrs. Grant thinks that Chloe may have some issues with gender and identity and has seen a marked decline in her schoolwork and her interest in school activities. Chloe used to be involved in the school drama group and the choir but lately has dropped out of both. Although she is willing to come to see the counsellor, Chloe is apprehensive about what information you may give back to Mrs. Grant and the other teachers.

Case Scenario 2: Joseph

Joseph is a 70-year-old man of Irish background. His wife Sarah died of a heart attack 2 years ago. Joseph resides in his 3 bed- room family home which he owns in the suburbs of Sydney/Canberra/Brisbane.

Joseph was always a caring husband who looked after his wife and son, Peter. After retiring as an electrician, Joseph worked in a local Grocery store part time until 3 months before his wife died. Joseph was recently diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease and was brought to a Neurology clinic at hospital by his son, Peter – as both were concerned about the increasing weakness Joseph had been experiencing in his legs. The Specialist has advised that Joseph’s physical capacities are likely to worsen during the next 18 months, and that his ability to walk and to use his arms will become more difficult.

Peter expressed concern to the Neurologist that Joseph hasn’t been managing at home as well as previously – particularly since the death of his wife. The house is often untidy, and he doesn’t believe that his father has been eating well. Peter has shared with his father that he would like to move back into the family home in order to assist with care, bringing his wife and 2-year-old daughter also. Joseph and Peter’s wife have had a strained relationship – and Joseph has always viewed Peter’s wife as being very controlling. Joseph is resistant to the idea of living under the same roof as his son and family.

The Neurology treating team have concerns about how Joseph will manage living alone as his condition deteriorates. Joseph is of the view that he has always been independent – and he is resistant to accepting strangers into his home to assist with any care or housework. He is particularly resistant to having his “controlling daughter in law” moving in and taking over his home.

You are a Social Work Student with the Neurology Team at Hospital and have been asked to see Joseph to conduct an initial assessment and consider his needs for future care and planning.

*Relate to the suburb in the city campus you are enrolled in.

Case Scenario 3: Nafisa

Nafisa and her husband Mustafa arrived in Australia with their two young children Ali (boy) aged 12 and Sana (girl) aged 10, as refugees from Iraq in 2014. The family endured much suffering and hardship before their refugee status was recognized by the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). The family spent four years in a refugee camp on the outskirts of Iraq. They have had no contact with the rest of their family and do not know if they are alive or dead. While in the refugee camp, the children attended a small make-shift school set up inside the camp. The children made a few friends at the camp. On arrival in Australia the family spent three years in a detention center. They now live in a two-bedroom apartment in the inner city. The two children attend a local school. Both children have trouble adjusting in school. They are teased by other children, often pushed and shoved, and some children even tell them that they are not Australians. Mustafa is currently unemployed, but a local Iraqi man has offered him to spend time at his car mechanic shop to learn basic skills in car repairs. Mustafa enjoys this as he has been able to meet other men from his country. Nafisa has been attending English language classes. However, more recently she has been experiencing health problems including severe headaches, stomachache, insomnia and waking up in the middle of the night in cold sweat. Nafisa has seen a GP and is currently receiving treatment. Mustafa is worried because Nafisa has isolated herself, has not made any friends, and refuses to meet other families from her country. Upon insistence of some Iraqi friends, Mustafa has brought Nafisa to the family center to see a social worker.

You are a student social worker in the family support center and have been asked to meet with Nafisa to assess her situation.
