Topic 1 Synthetic Meat Futures
IMPORTANT: This is only an imaginary scenario set in a very near future:
The government of Australia announces that a new synthetic (in-vitro) form of meat has passed all tests and is safe for consumption. But the government imposes a new Synthetic Food Tax (SFT) on the new food in order to support existing farmers and the existing meat industry – butchers, transport, cattle and sheep herders, vets etc. The new synthetic meat is 25% more expensive by weight than ordinary meat, but without the tax it would be cheaper than meat. Environmentalists want the tax removed to make it as cheap as possible, so that it will - a) help save animal lives, b) limit pain and suffering in the treatment of animals, c) help preserve the ground environment used now for herds, d) limit the methane emissions from large animals adding to climate change gases. Some others, not interested in the environment, also say a new tax is never a good idea. Their leader, Bob Blunt states: “always let economic markets decide – money and consuming are the most important things”.
Supporters of the new tax say two things: “what about the suffering of farmers?” And – “it is the government’s responsibility to help with financial and job losses.”
The government is considering a ‘sunset clause’ – which means setting an ending date for the new tax. Synthetic meat will then be cheap and plentiful, but there is much discussion and disagreement. Should there be a sunset clause?
Your Report:
You are writing a report explaining the issue to a small community group. You are the only person who has studied the issue at university in your favourite unit – Thinking Critically about Texts and Society! And that makes you confident you can untangle the different interests and values and discuss the issue.
[You must] Use the main reading for this topic (Schaefer and Savulescu on In-vitro meat) and/or something (one or two more items) from the short list in the Report-In-Vitro Meat section in the vUWS Reading List to help define any terms or issues.
You will end with a recommendation about the sunset clause – should the tax end – and if so, when and why? Will it not end and should go on forever?
The Report: 1000 words total. Word document, double space or space and a half, put references in a references list at the end. Research using at least two items; one of them can be the main reading from the relevant week. Use APA referencing

Section 2) Principles and values: Show how the different interest groups might have different principles in thinking about the issue. Which are economic, which are ethical, and which are more political.
Section 3) Discussion: Explain the contrasting or conflicting perspectives. Define any important terms or concepts relevant to the issue. Look at the different options for reaching a resolution. Can some compromise work or not?
Section 4) Your brief recommendation - what do you think should happen? And why?
