System Variables
System variables are things that can be controlled within an actual court case (wells & memon &Penrod 2006). System variables can be divided into two categories which are interviewing eyewitness and identification of suspects. Interviewing eyewitness is the process that involves recall memory methods such cognitive interview, and identification of suspects involves recognition memory including photographs, videos, and line ups. The procedure is known as a show up in the usa and as confrontation in uk. Line ups are widely used especially in the uk and us. In the usa line-ups may consists of a live line up of people standing in a array of photographs. In the uk official guidance states that photographs should not used to obtain formal identification evidence of an arrested suspect. Historically identification has been made by use of live line ups known as identity
parades.
A face is the most reliable way to recognise somebody by a well perceived photograph including vivid colours. According to cutler et all 2004 supports that live line ups, videotaped line ups or photo arrays produce substantial differences in identification performance. According to In England and wales, formal identification evidence has been obtained by use of live line ups. However, since 2003, technology has been used to replace virtually all live identity parades. The video line ups consist of 15 second clips of a head and shoulders shot of each line-up member.
Firstly, they are looking at the camera and then rotate their head to show both profiles before looking back at the camera. The images are captured by standardised conditions. Each line up is shown sequentially one at the time.
