What is this project about?

The aim of this mini-project is to investigate whether an individual’s tendency to “systemize” (understand things or think of information in terms of systems) is related to their performance on tasks of executive function and/or tests of verbal or non-verbal IQ. This project will predominantly use regression analyses (and perhaps correlations as well) to explore these constructs. You should select at least two variables and examine their relationship with ability to systemize.

It is important to keep in mind that you will not be collecting data for this project (although you would normally). You have been provided with pre-collected data. After reading some starter papers and relevant background literature, you should decide what variables in data set provided best address the question/s you have. You should bear in mind when that is important that you motivate your choice of variables from literature and that you are able to articulate this convincingly in your report.  

The data file contains the following test outcomes:

Tower of Hanoi – an executive function task measuring ability to plan, organize and be flexible. 

Raven’s Progressive Matrices – measures non-verbal abstract reasoning and intelligence

Narional Adult Reading Test (NART) – a measure of intelligence

WAIS-IQ – an IQ test designed to measure generalized intelligence.

Systemizing Quotient (SQ) – ability to think in systems, apply the rules of the system and predict the outcome of the operation of a system.

Remember to check what the scores on these scales mean, e.g., does a higher score mean something is better or worse.

Do not worry that the starter papers provided tend to be from the perspective of research into autism. This reflects the origins of the SQ measure. The data provided to you was collected from a general student population aged between 18 and 21.

What am I supposed to learn from it?

By the end of this mini-project you should:

  • Have a working knowledge of the construct of systemizing, as well as executive functioning and/or IQ;

  • Know something about how to measure these constructs

  • Know how to design and conduct a study to test hypotheses;

  • Know something about controlling for confounding factors;

  • Be able to analyse, interpret and evaluate experimental data;

  • Be able to write up an experimental study in a journal article format.
