This passage is an excerpt from Educated a memoir by Tara Westover about her childhood and journey toward education. Westover was born in 1986 in a remote and mountainous part of Idaho. She was the youngest of seven children. Her parents did not believe in public education, so Westover never attended school. By law, Westover should have been educated at home by her parents, but in reality, the instruction she received was inconsistent and incomplete. Her parents also did not believe in doctors, so Westover never received health care during her childhood, even for serious injuries. In addition, her family followed Mormonism, a form of Christianity that is mainly practiced in the western United States. Furthermore, Westover's family practiced a very conservative (very strict) form of Mormonism. Her father referred to anyone who was not a Mormon as a "gentile." Seeking escape, Westover began to educate herself in her teens. She managed to gain admission to Brigham Young University, o Mormon university in Salt Lake City, Utah. She left her family at age 17 for college, her first experience of formal education. She went on to graduate from BYU with honors. In 2014, she earned a doctorate in history.
