Summary of task

● Conduct a literature review into teaching as inquiry, using sources as appropriate.

● Choose a social sciences context that you would use for learning, an AO and 1-2 concepts.

● Choose 1-2 resources that you would use to facilitate your session with.

● Plan your session as you might teach that context using evidence-based pedagogies.

● Design a research plan to gather data ethically.

● Write your assignment as below.

 Part A

1. An introduction to the setting, including 

● For this part, use the school you may have mostly recently done practicum days in

● A description of the school and its community (e.g. decile, year level, co-ed/single sex, urban/rural, Māori immersion/English/Māori medium, public/private), and its key learning aims and values. Use a pseudonym for the school.

● A description of the learners’ class level and any prior Social Studies learning the class has been involved in. Comment on the class’s diversity or otherwise, and learners’ dispositions if you can gather this information.

2. Explanation of your chosen context 

● A description of the chosen context for learning, with justification of how this fits with the aims of social sciences.

● A statement of your selected AO and concept(s) and how this fits the context.

● A brief description of your chosen resources and how they fitted with your context, AO and concept(s).

3. Literature review 

● A review of literature regarding teaching as inquiry using a range of sources to explain the process, benefits and challenges of teaching as inquiry.

4. Research methodology

● A description of the teaching as inquiry plan, including your inquiry question, what you would implement with the learners, what evidence/data you would gather and how this would be done.

● A discussion of the ethical approaches you would engage with in the inquiry and the significance of these.

● A discussion of how you would use the evidence gained through your inquiry to plan what your next steps would be as a teacher.

Part B Graphic

 1. Create a one page graphic This should depict your developing understanding of teaching as inquiry. Draw on your experience of working with your group of learners to depict the strengths and challenges of your teaching as inquiry, as well as your responsibilities as a teacher in honouring and appreciating students’ lived experiences/voices in the inquiry. The graphic should contain both images and text. The graphic is not part of the word count.

2. Write one page of notes This should support your graphic, explaining its elements/parts and the strengths, challenges and responsibilities depicted. Use a range of references from your reading throughout this paper to support your discussion.
