Ted Kaczynski’s early life was actually one of great potential. He was born on May 22nd 1942 and grew up in a nice home in Chicago, Illinois. He was quite a gifted child as he excelled academically and had many achievements growing up, however his social skills did lack. This caused other kids to treat him as a loner and make fun of him. Despite this he was able to move onto studying at Ivy League schools and pursuing mathematics. During his time at Harvard he participated in a “Harvard psychological experiment headed by Henry Murray aimed to discover the limits of psychic deconstruction through weekly encounters with humiliation” (Worthen 2019). It is said that he spent about 3 years participating in this experiment while be subject to verbal abuse constantly. After this he got his doctorate degree and went on to teach at the University of California. He resigned fairly quickly, as he only taught for two years. He never gave a reason as to why he resigned, but some students say that he was having a hard time teaching. Shortly after, he moved into “near total isolation, hunting rabbits, growing vegetables and spending much of his time reading” (2014).  

Ted’s crimes started off slow and gradually became more and more severe as time went on, as he was able to remain uncaptured for 17 years. In this time, he was able to kill 3 people and injury about 2 dozen through a series of homemade explosive bombs. He developed the title of the “Unabomber” as he actively targeted universities and airlines as well. It was only when he reached out to newspapers like The Washington Post and The New York Times to publish his Manifesto that he got caught. He threatened to continue the bombings if they didn’t publish it so, “The manifesto, [which was] titled “Industrial Society and Its Future” was first published in September 1995” (2014).
