Scenario
You are the project engineer for a shipbuilding company in Qatar called Seaquest. You have been asked by your Shipyard Director to design a cruise ship for tourists in the Middle East who want to tour the Gulf States and beyond.
You will need to draw up a plan for ship design and a specification for the type, durability and amount of materials needed in the construction of the ship based on a number of experiments to be carried out by you to test the various parameters of the materials you are going to use.
The ship will need to be able to withstand a variety of heavy loads and environmental variables according to its own intrinsic weight /mass distribution as well as the variable weights of passengers and cargo and the changing aquatic and climatic conditions normally experienced by a sea going vessel in this region of the world.
You will need to compare the ability of metal and non-metal materials to withstand heavy loads through destructive and non-destructive testing along with their degradable properties both when static and in motion using elastic, electrical and magnetic hysteresis theories.
You will also need use Archimedes principle to determine the maximum load bearing capacity of the ship to assess at what point the ship would sink and build in a safety limit that would guarantee the ship never sinks as a result of extra load bearing.
The elasticity and breaking point of various materials will be tested and compared with published academic papers on the same subject. From this you will choose the right materials to be included in the construction of the ship.
Your specification will need to use Alembert's principle to assess the amount of energy needed to accelerate the ship from a static to a moving position and beyond as well as determining the changing power of aquatic and aeronautic currents electromagnetic and thermodynamic forces on the elastic structure of the materials used in the ship and the extra force needed to accelerate or decelerate the ship according speed and safety considerations.
Extra consideration needs to be given to the effect of heat on the operating of the ship in both normal and extreme fluctuations of climatic aeronautic and aquatic temperature as well as the effects on the machinery of extra heat generated to power the vessel in varying load bearing and ambient conditions.
Task
You will give a presentation to the shipyard’s board of directors outlining your assignment brief, that includes –
(1) the structural properties of metals and non-metals with reference to their material properties,
(2) types of degradation found in metals,
(3) non-metals, elastic, electrical and magnetic hysteresis in different materials and
(4) include the Destructive Tests / Non Destructive test results comparisons, analysis and rationale for recommending your final choice of materials (metals and or non-metals) and the parameters for the cruise ship.
