Brief

Design an ensemble (an entire outfit including accessories and all items of clothing) for a hypothetical character who lives in a post-apocalyptic future. The ensemble needs to include at least two innovative textile technologies. Research at least two textile technologies and show how they can be applied in the design of your ensemble (applications can be functional or aesthetic – or both). 
• Select two of the five topic areas, undertake initial research into one specific textiles technology innovation in each of those topic areas. Locate an exciting example of innovative textiles technology that could be used in the design of your ensemble.

• Write/draw (create) a one A4 page character profile of a hypothetical character who lives in a post-apocalyptic world approx. 50 years in the future. Consider: 
o Was it a disaster? – what caused this post-apocalyptic situation to occur? Is this future a utopian or dystopian? Briefly describe and create a mood- board to show the design context. What is the situation in which the character lives? 
o Age and gender 
o Socio-economic status 
o Occupation 
o Personal challenges and history 
o Personal life goals 
• Write a design a one A4 page brief based on the character profile, name your character and describe what their needs are. Name your character. 
• Design an ensemble for this character to wear which includes at least two examples of innovative textile technology (these might be available now, but you speculate that they could do more, or they might be examples that are based on research and not currently available, or the application may be entirely speculative 
You may imagine how a technology could be used or applied in the future). Present an annotated image – design the ensemble, draw it using fashion illustration techniques, then using arrows – point to the innovative textile technologies or other key design features in the ensemble which make it unique. 
• Prepare a brief PPT presentation with between 5-10 slides 
o Describes the hypothetical character profile and the context of their life 
o Create a mood board which expresses some aspects of the charter and their context 
o Describe their need for innovative textiles – what do they need and why? 
How do innovative textile technologies improve their life? 
o Describe how the specific textiles technologies case studies you have researched assist this hypothetical character to live a better life – discuss how and why they do this specifically (do these textiles improve poor air quality for instance?) 
• PPT presentation should include the following slides:

o Mood Board (digital or collaged by hand) 
o Character Profile

o Design Ensemble (annotated colour image of designed garments and accessories, digital or drawn by hand using costume illustration techniques and a template)

(a) one 10-minute, approx. 10 slide textile innovation case study presentation using PPT file (or equivalent) – including the components listed above. Students are required to present their case study and then lead a short critical discussion with peers (what are the pro’s and con’s of these innovative textile technologies?) 
(b) PPT presentation file with a list of references 
(c) 1 x 2-300 word written summary of the critical student discussion (including 2 pre- prepared discussion initiation questions); summarise opportunities and limitations discussed by peers in response to each specific textile innovation case-study. This can be written in report style using dot points.

• These topics will be discussed in detail during the lectures and many research resources will be supplied on LEO. 
Examples of the types of critical questions you might use to analyse your innovative textiles technologies examples:

example of an organisation (NGO) or group that is specifically aiming to address that issue, discuss their motivation/s and how they are attempting to address the problem/s.

o Ethics: Describe 1 example of a specific industry issue related to ethics (social sustainability). Then, describe 1 example of an organisation (NGO) or group that is specifically aiming to address that issue, discuss their motivation/s and how they are attempting to address the problem/s.

o Australian textile market, global context & supply chain management innovation: Critically evaluate and discuss the role of research and development in innovation (for Textiles technology). Discuss this in relation to a specific textile innovation in the Australian Textile Marketplace that you have studied. 
• An ideal example could relate to how one piece of CAD or CAM or ICT technology has made a global textile supply chain more efficient for example.
