Assignment Task:

Indigenous Australians means Tribal people or first peoples of Australia. They are known as the Aboriginal people of Australia. They speak different languages with various unique cultural beliefs, practices and traditions. Before 1788 Australia was populated only by the Indigenous people of Australia with a population of 750000 people. They lived a hunter and gatherer life. Today’s Australia is mixture of all people and practices (Natasha Mooney 2015).

According to me the job that works closely with Indigenous people is Social work. The role of Social worker is to help needy people including Individual, disadvantage, marginalised, and Indigenous group of the community. Social workers can play a role on variety of problems related to Indigenous people like violence, education, rights, social justice, and many more. “The social work profession facilitates social change and development, social cohesion and the empowerment and liberation of people” (Australian Association of Social Work,2013, NP). social workers respect the inherent dignity and worth of Indigenous and respect their human rights. ‘Human rights are often categorised as first, second and third generations. First generation rights are civil and political rights, like the right to vote, freedom of speech, freedom from discrimination, fair trial etc. Second generation rights are economic, social and cultural rights, like the right to health, housing, social security and education. Third generation rights are collective rights, such as the right to development and self-determination’ (Australian human rights commission, 2007, NP).

Studying subject like Aboriginal Australian is beneficial because working with Aboriginal people and their communities is important and informative as it helps us to understand their diverse culture, history and dynamics of Aboriginal society. Records and difference between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. In context of mortality rate, the mortality rate of Indigenous Australian is more than non-Indigenous. The mortality rate if Indigenous Australia is 17,564 whereas for non-indigenous this rate is 85,400 out of 10000. There is various reason behind this high mortality rate. According to the world bank, the Indigenous people world-wide continued to be among the poorest of the poor and continue to suffer from poverty, low education, unemployment and incidence of disease than non-indigenous people. Indigenous people are poorer than non-Indigenous people. In the late year 2001, out of 100, more than 82 people are under low income line where as the non-indigenous rate is only 55, with the passage of time the poverty rate is decreasing due to the poverty. They are unable to afford better living standard and education which is main cause of high death rate. As poverty lead to less education which further leads to less employment. The employment rate of Indigenous Australian is very low as compared to non-Indigenous. In 2001 out of 100 only 17 indigenous people are working, however in case of non-indigenous 28 people are working, with this number increase to 44 and 60 respectively.Due to less employment, indigenous Australian have less excess to health care facilities and they live in re mote areas and have less trust towards medical industry, negative social attitude is some of the reasons identified for poor health and heart disease, which is the major contributor to the mortality gap for indigenous and non- indigenous Australia (Australian Bureau of statistics). Not only student of Social work but I believe children also should get knowledge about Aboriginal people. The most important reason why kids should learn about Aboriginal History Is that of empathy, feeling of sympathy and engagement from different culture and time periods. ‘If students can develop the knowledge of why cultures are different it will help develop empathy and encourage an appreciation for diversity, and hopefully, undermine growth of racist viewpoints’ the conversation (Michael Westaway, 2014).
