The aim of the report is to act as a HRM change agent and provide an in-depth analysis of a recent change process within a real-life organisation. The focus of the analysis should relate to any of the HRM functions including: training; development; recruitment; selection; performance management; rewards and motivation; health, safety and wellbeing; diversity; negotiation; and industrial relations. You will investigate the change that has taken place through collecting, analysing and interpreting interview data and data sourced from databases, websites and annual reports. You must conduct one interview with a manager and one interview with an employee within the organisation who was involved in the change. Interviews can be conducted in person, via phone, email or Skype. You will then need to critically analyse the data with reference to the recent academic literature and the theories, ideas and concepts covered in the course. Part of this will include discussing what the organisation has done well in accordance to the literature and also what they have not done well. You will make informed and relevant recommendations to the organisation and provide future solutions for effective change management within the organisation.Outcomes: This assessment will effectively demonstrate your capacity to:analyse and critically evaluate organisational change practices and issues which relate to any of the HRM functionsplan and undertake an independent research project integrate connections between scholarly ideas, concepts and theories and professional preparation by applying relevant tools, techniques and solutions to practical workplace problemsThe report you produce may also have important implications for your targeted organisation. Working with a partner may assist in time management and workload allocation and can aid in the development of a host of skills that are increasingly important in the professional workplace. However, you may also choose to work individually if you prefer. If searching for a partner, students should spend time thinking about what factors are important to them. Students may wish to form a pair based on commonalities such as: topic/organisational/industry interest; time availability; work/family/study/personal commitments; goals for the course; etc.There will also be an opportunity to form pairs during the workshop sessions and also via the Discussion Board forum.In working in pairs, the mark awarded will apply to both students however in exceptional circumstances, the convener may have cause to award different marks to individuals. Any major issues should first be addressed within the pair and then, if required, brought to the attention of the Convenor in a timely manner.Students should be aware that personal circumstances can change and some students may withdraw from this course for various reasons. If a student withdraws from the course then the remaining student will be required to complete the assessment as an individual.For students who decide to work in pairs, you are required to review and complete the ‘Behavioural Contract' which can be found under the Assessment 3 Resource Folder. This form will assist in outlining aspects such as: ground rules (e.g., punctuality, communication response times), workload allocation, meeting times, timelines, and agreed actions.
This contract is compulsory for those working in pairds and will be useful in managing expectations. Students will be required to upload the behavioural contract document before the start of Week 5 (Monday by 3pm).Identify a Suitable OrganisationNot all organisations are receptive to students undertaking a project in their organisation because they are busy and may like to keep their affairs confidential. Therefore, it can be preferable to identify an organisation through a personal contact (via a friend, relative, colleaguge) who is willing to act as contact person.The organisation can be based in Australia or overseasYou need to select an organisation or department/division of an organisation. While small organisations can be suitable for this project, it is often preferable (but not compulsory) to select a medium to large organisation (around 50 employees or more) where a range of HRM processes can be operating. The organisation does not necessarily need to have an HR department or staff. The focus is on analysing their performance of HR functions (e.g. training; development; recruitment; selection; performance management; rewards and motivation; health, safety and wellbeing; diversity; negotiation; industrial relations) some of which managers or supervisors may be performing (please focus your attention on one or two of these areas if they are clearly interconnected)The organisation could be a in the public (government) or private sector, for profit or non-profit. Examples of such organisations are schools, banks, government departments, university departments, hotels/restaurants, supermarket chains etc. Alternatively you may wish to find an organisation aligned to your future professional interests. If you are unsure, please confirm with your tutor the suitability of the organisation you have in mind. Approach a Suitable OrganisationOnce you identify the organisation, you need to approach a representative of the organisation who deals with external relations.
This could be the owner, head of the department, public relations officer, personnel/ human resources manager, administration manager etc.Consider how you will ask for the organisation's co-operation. This is an opportunity to practice the communication and professional skills you have acquired. You are representing your community and building your own professional image so remember to be considerate, thoughtful and respectful in your communications and interactions. You may wish to contact them via email or LinkedIn. You could try calling them although often they would prefer to review these sorts of requests in writing. Please be clear and concise in your correspondence and appreciate that their time is valuable, especially in the current circumstances.You should introduce yourself, what you are studying and what kind of work you hope to be doing once you graduate. You will then outline to them very briefly the purpose of this assessment. The overview provided above might be useful as well as the information contained in the 'Information Sheet and Consent Form' located in the Resources Folder. You will need to ensure that you included these documents in the Appendices at the end of your report.You may take the Course Profile for this course and a copy of this assessment information to help explain the nature of the project. Refer also to the information sheet and consent form under the Resources folder. The privacy of the organisation and the participants is of utmost importance. You need to assure the organisation that any identifiable information obtained (such as the name of the organisation an participants) can, at their request, be de-identified from your report and in that case will not be divulged to any third party outside of the organisation or university. Students must provide the interviewees with a copy of the 'Information Sheet' and receive a signed 'Consent Form' from each interviewee. Students are bound to adhere the conditions laid out in these forms. Please remember that in most cases organisations will permit you to use their business name in the report - however this needs to be explicitly agreed to. However, the names of any interviewees must be de-identified in your final report (see Participant Sheet). Anonymity can be ensured through use of pseudonyms (fictitious name or code for the interviewee). Some organisations may request that the name of their business also needs to remain confidential (see Participant Sheet). While you will have some knowledge of content and process please rest assured that you are not expected to be a content expert when you engage with industry. You are in the process of learning and acquiring knowledge. That said, recommendations and solutions to issues or challenges should be reserved to the written report.
