Consider the beam with the loading shown in Figure I. The beam sits on top of two cylindrical support columns (it is not fixed to the supports it is just resting on the supports). The columns are made from steel and have a Young's Modulus of 200 GPa and a Poisson's ratio of 0.3.

1. Draw the FBD of the beam. You will need to solve the reactions in the y at the supports A and B. To do so, you will need to break down the distributed load (1 mark) 2. Draw the SFD and BMD of the beam (using the section method — YOU MUST SHOW ALL YOUR WORKING) and identify the critical section/s along the length of the beam. (43 marks) 3. Determine the maximum bending stress in the beam and identify the points of maximum tension and compression on the cross-section (1 mark) 4. For each of the support columns, calculate the normal stress, normal strain, and lateral strain. Hint: the reaction forces of A and B will be the axial force in each of the columns.
