Assignment Task:

Task 1

In your own words, describe the concept of ‘software engineering’ as a discipline. What differentiates a ‘software engineer’ from a ‘programmer’? What does a ‘software engineer’ do?

Task 2

Using your own suitable diagrams and examples, compare and contrast THREE software development lifecycle (SDLC) methodologies, taking care to highlight the stages, features, strengths and weakness of each, plus suggesting the most suitable type of application project for each.

Task 3

Using the supplied case study in the appendix, illustrate how the Unified Modelling Language (UML) may be deployed as part of an Object-Oriented software development project. You should ensure that you clearly demonstrate the full range of UML features. Clearly annotated diagrams are obviously vital. The precise nature of your case study is irrelevant – as long as it can support all the UML features. Perhaps use a workplace example or something from another area?

Task 4

Take your finalized UML model and generate the corresponding pseudocode that is capable of being implemented. You should endeavour to illustrate the full range of programming constructs – such as loops, logical branching etc. You may do this manually or use some type of tool to automate the process.

Task 5

Critically evaluate at least two implementation languages that could be used to build this pseudocode. Again, you should supply your own supporting code snippets as a minimum but ideally a fully working and tested program. You should evidence any code you write and execute via annotated screenshots.

Appendix: Case Study

‘Island Hopper’ is a new start-up airline which will be based at Glasgow Airport to service the Inner and Outer Hebrides, Orkney and the Shetland Islands. The company currently have two types of aircraft; a Twin Otter and the Saab 340. They intend to purchase new types of aircraft in the future. Collectively, they have a fleet of 10 aircraft, and a payroll containing 25 pilots, 60 cabin crew, 20 check-in staff, 20 back office admin staff and 12 technical maintenance staff – who all work a rotating shift system consisting of working 12-hour shifts, three days on, three days off. The data they capture and store includes:

  • Details of all routes flown (fares, timings, destinations etc.)
  • Details of all customers (name, contact details, age etc.)
  • Details of bookings (customers, flight, seat details, cabin class etc.)
  • Details of aircraft (aircraft model, passenger capacity etc)
  • Details of shift rotas (start times, end times, days worked etc., annual leave)
  • Details of maintenance (aircraft, technician, dates, description of work etc.)

The above is simply an outline of the data requirements. You should make your own assumptions to interpret or even extend the scenario as you go. Use your imagination as you see fit but you must clearly document all assumptions and extensions.
