Purpose:
To support the local business and traders at Tunstall Square in their recovery due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background:
The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown have resulted in severe impacts to the local business community. While many businesses have had support from government initiatives such as JobKeeper, tax incentives, rent relief and business grants, they still face a struggle to return to ‘normal’ as restrictions are eased.
Customers who have changed their work-life conditions have shifted to online ordering, working from home, and tightening their budgets.
As shopping centres reopen Tunstall Square is looking for new ways to support and encourage visitation and local shopping. These centres also share the local council’s desire to provide attractive community spaces where local families can safely gather again -- even if they are not actively shopping.
Manningham City Council runs a comprehensive business development program that focuses on capacity building through various workshops, seminars and one-on-one mentoring, but the Tunstall Square Traders Association is keen for further suggestions.
 

The Task:
Your group should develop a simple and low-cost idea (such as a small event, or a slogan) to assist the Tunstall Square Traders Association communicate with local residents about the services and activities on offer there. By doing this, traders hope to encourage more people to come to the shopping centre and support their business. As is so often the case with groups like this, there is no budget; however you can suggest some minor ‘in kind’ support from traders. Some traders might also be willing to volunteer their time – but as they say ‘time is money’ and traders are already struggling financially from 18 months of difficult trading conditions (caused mainly by periodic lockdowns).
This is not an easy task, and a solution for all the problems they are facing is beyond the scope of your (communication) brief. You should develop a small initiative that encourages local residents to come to the shopping centre.
Elements of your assignment:
The group should collectively submit:
1)    A single page document that describes the idea, and the process the group went through to develop and refine the idea. This should be formatted as if it is an email being sent to the President of the Traders Association to introduce your plan and tactical device ideas. Approximately 500 words.
With the above in mind we are looking for plans that capture the unique elements of Tunstall Square.

·       Demographics (the composition of the local community)
·       Business sector (what businesses are located in the centre, with attention to ‘attractors’)
·       Need (what are the day-to-day needs of typical consumers, versus their special/non-regular needs – birthdays, celebrations, festivities, etc)
·       The very limited scope of what can be delivered (few resources, short time-frame, and basically no budget).
