Introduction
Human resource for health (HRH) is defined as “the stock of individuals who are involved in promotion, protection and improvement of population health”. It consists of both private and public sectors and the other domains of health system as well. Most important human resource directly engaging with the community and the essential link between the community and health services being the CHW (Community health workers), they play a frontline role in managing health care services and improving health services’ performance (Naimoli et al., 2014). The idea of utilizing community members to provide the neighborhoods they come from with such primary health - care services seems to have at least a 50-year tradition. The Chinese barefoot doctor is among the early programs best remembered, however, for example, since the early 1950s, Thailand too has enabled utilization of village health volunteers and facilitators.
Objectives of the study
The objectives of the study will include the following-
1. To examine the potential and scope of CHW programs in Australia
2. To explore the effect of CHW programs on improvement in primary health care
3. To find out the challenges faced in integrating CHWs in the public health system.
Study design and methodology
A qualitative methodology will be used in order to answer the research questions. Qualitative research seeks to develop a deeper understanding of meaningful discussions through first-hand observation, truthful reporting, and quotes. It seeks to explain how the respondents make meaning from their context, as well as how their understanding affects their actions. It will help in gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges and experiences of the CHWs, policy makers and program managers while working in the primary health sector (Queirós et al 2017). The study to be conducted will employ two methods-
1. Systematic literature review, to examine the scope and potential of the CHW programs in Australia and to explore the effect of the CHW programs on improvement in primary health care. A systematic literature review is a technique for study that is intended to address a focused research query. A methodical and systematic literature synthesis is carried out by authors based on a well-formulated research issue.
