Introduction

There have been numerous studies into motivational strategies, the different types of motivation, the role of the teacher and how praise and rewards are effective (or not) to motivate students, but this research looks at demotivation within a cohort of BTEC Level 2 students studying computing and gaming.  It is interesting that a computer student is stereotyped as being highly motivated, but in throughout this case study, I will aim to bring to light the sources of demotivation and how this effects learners. 

Context

This study is conducted in a college in Kent, which is located in the south-east of England.  To the west side it borders a London borough and to the north side across the Thames estuary is Essex. Kent is known as the garden of England, surrounded with great green belt and open space and is a stark contrast to inner city living.  The college is located just a stone’s throw of inner-city London, so students can travel in very easily. There is a big catchment area for the college and the surrounding Kent and London boroughs have a diverse population as well as a mix of high end and poverty-stricken areas.  Kent is one of the only counties in England that has a mixture of grammar, independent and privately funded educational institutions, so on the one hand where the admission fees for independent schools is on a termly basis and there is fierce competition (from boroughs from outside the catchment area) to gain admission into these grammar schools, conversely there are also many state funded schools and academies that face many ongoing problems and challenges of their own.  Many students come from areas where unemployment, poverty and the crime rate is very high and students have a very challenging background.

• Your topic and research question(s): The area of my research looks at the sources of student demotivation, the impact of it on the students’ performance. 

• Significance of the project: Why are students so demotivated? What are the reasons for demotivated students? How do past experiences contribute and result in demotivated students? What can educational institutions do to increase motivation? This study will bring to light that demotivation in students comes from past experiences and must be addressed quickly within our current education system. 

• Research design and methodology: A positivist approach where data will be captured from surveys and enrolment forms.  I will use this quantitative data to collate the results.
