Highlights
Assessment Details
This assessment is designed to enable students to think about the content that will be delivered in the unit and begin to engage in the practice of identifying academic evidence for topics of discussion. The assessment is not graded, but rather is marked on a satisfactory/unsatisfactory basis. This means that an adequate attempt (defined below) will be considered sufficient to pass this assessment component.
To complete the formative assessment, students will post two (2) contributions to the discussion forum, following the discussion prompts included below. The first post involves identifying one topic to be covered during the term (i.e. from the Weekly Schedule given in this document and the introduction to content from Lecture 1) that is of personal interest. The second post involves responding to another students post by including a link to a relevant academic source that explores aspects of the topic being discussed. The two posts must then be formally submitted to the class space. Students should adhere to professional academic language in creating these posts and should demonstrate an understanding of appropriate and ethical ways to engage in interpersonal communication.
Specific information about this assessment
The Discussion Forum will be available when the class space opens. Once students have read the assessment instructions, they may begin to make their forum posts at any time.
Students should read the Unit Plan and the Student Code of Conduct before they begin posting on the Discussion Forum. Students should remember to treat other students with respect, dignity, courtesy and sensitivity. The use of respectful language ability to be courteous in written response to other students will be directly evaluated within this assessment as critical evidence of ULO b). It is important that students remember to also maintain professional boundaries and do not disclose personal contact information or any other information not suitable for a public forum.
Students will be required to make at least two (2) posts on the Discussion Forum. Posts should be labelled Contribution to Discussion Forum 1 and Contribution to Discussion Forum 2 to facilitate identification and to distinguish these posts from other posts that you may wish to make. To formally submit this assignment, students are required to copy both of discussion posts into a Word Document and submit this via an online link on Moodle through the "Submit Formative Assessment" Link. All submissions will be analysed through Turnitin to check for the originality of your work. The assessment cannot be considered complete unless this word document summary is posted to the Submit Formative Assessment Link.
Discussion Forum posts should cover the following information:
Contribution to Discussion1: this post involves reading through this unit outline and identifying a topic to be covered in the unit that is of particular interest to you. In your post you should identify the topic (including the week the topic will be covered) and discuss 1) why you are particularly interested in this topic and 2) one particular aspect you are looking forward to learning more about. The post should be approximately words in length.
Contribution to Discussion2: this post involves responding to another student's discussion forum post and providing some positive feedback as well as a link to an academic/scientific resource that provides information on that particular topic. This discussion forum post will therefore require you to read some of the posts provided and then search for a relevant resource. For example, if a discussion post from another student is about whether children learn better through punishment or reward, you might look for a scientific article on this topic (see the assessment information provided on the Moodle class space for a list of acceptable academic sources).
