Chapter 1- Introduction

The topic of my research is “The Experience of Indonesian Students Studying in Malaysian Private Higher Educational Institutions”. On the basis of this topic, the research will be discussing about the experiences which are being faced by the Indonesian students while they are studying in private higher educational institutions. This research will be listing out the positive as well as negative experiences of the students by the stating the major factors which are affecting the Indonesian student to migrating Malaysia for the purpose of education.

1.1 Research Background

Indonesia is considered as the key market for higher education in Malaysia. As there are fewer opportunities in the Indonesian education and placement sector, students prefer to go abroad and study in Malaysian universities. Malaysian universities provide better education and multiple placement options. The teaching faculty and education system in Malaysian universities is stronger than Indonesian universities. Among all the universities of Malaysia, there will be around 10,000 Indonesian students and with such vast numbers, Malaysia plans to take this number to 20,000 students by the year 2020. Strategies are being ram-ped by the EMGS (Education Malaysia Global Services). EMGS is an owned company that is promoting higher education in Malaysia (Natsirn, 2018). This company is providing services like holding an education event where big private and public universities in Malaysia come to participate. One such recent event was held in Jakarta, Indonesia where 18 universities from Malaysia participated. There are problems like culture barriers, language barriers, and different social problems. People in Indonesian universities, cannot work properly as they are not open up to English and other languages. Their culture is from a very low background and thus they have a problem in learning new cultures. The Indonesian culture and people in that culture are not modern and thus their lifestyle is very old. Hence even to improve their lifestyle people go abroad and study in different universities and schools. The universities in Indonesia face a shortage of teachers every time. Thus the teachers in the universities were appointed with the help of a government drive in the country. As stated above the Malaysian universities see the Indonesian students there target market, the Malaysian universities have started focusing on the marketing in the Indonesian countries. As the teachers in Indonesian universities do not want to work in rural areas and prefer urban areas to teach students (Triwiyanto and Juharyanto, 2017). Thus Malaysian universities focus on rural areas more and even provide scholarships to people from different nations. The students, who have good money and good class, want a good education system; migrate to the Malaysian universities and schools. The living and food expenses of Malaysian universities and in the country itself is very cheap and reasonable for the students, thus they can easily afford their living standards in that country. The students going to Indonesia for the studies are opting for Malaysia for the studies that have major reasons behind that because students from Indonesia don't need to be moving out to Malaysia only. They can also visit some other countries to gain higher education. But Malaysia is majorly selected by the students because firstly, Malaysia is considered Asia's emerging higher education hub. According to UNESCO, Malaysia is known as the top destination for the studies which is quite popular for providing the students with the quality of education. Secondly, Malaysia is accompanied by some of the best universities in the world. This includes both public as well as private universities. There is a total of 400 universities in Malaysia which are specialized in various courses. This provides the students with multiple options for studies. Thirdly, Malaysia is eliminating the problem of the language barrier. Though the national language of Malaysia is Malaysian people living in Malaysia are well familiar with English. This is providing opportunities for the students to improve their English skills along with learning the regional language (Ajisuksmo, 2017). Fourth and the most important factor because of which Indonesian students are moving out to Malaysia are because of the high quality living at a very low cost. The students coming from Indonesia are not that rich as the economy of Indonesia is not that stable. Malaysia is offering the students an affordable educational course along with the quality of living standards. Food, accommodation and other daily expenses are quite affordable for the students while studying in Malaysia. Lastly, the culture and diversity of Malaysia are quite adaptable for the students coming from outside. The people living in Malaysia are quite socializing and they like to know about other cultures. There are many tourist attractions places in Malaysia along with free-time activities. These activities can be the major attraction for the students to enjoy and experience apart from the studies.
