Participants
The sample included 261 undergraduate students (63 males, 196 females, 1 non-binary sex, 1 preferred not to answer) enrolled in QUT’s psychology unit pyb204. The unit’s coordinator requested participants to complete the task for assessment purposes.

Design
The experiment was a within-subjects design. The independent variable (IV) had two levels: whether the target letters were presented globally or locally (level one), or neither (level two), in each trial. Global format refers to the large letter shape the smaller sized letters created, and the smaller ones are the local format. The dependent variable (DV) is the averaged reaction time of correctly performed trials, reported in milliseconds (ms). Reaction times were measured as the time that elapsed between the appearance of a stimulus and the response. The RT and accuracy for each trial were automatically recorded and reported when the experiment ended.
 

Procedure
The visual-perception task was adapted from Navon (1977). An electronic device with a screen and keyboard was required. A link was provided for partakers to complete the experiment. In this task, participants needed to indicate if the letters ‘H’ or ‘O’ were seen in global or local format by pressing the keyboard letter ‘B’. If neither ‘H’ nor ‘O’ was seen in either format, the keyboard letter ‘N’ needed to be pressed. Partakers were instructed to situate their fingers on the ‘B’ and ‘N’ keyboard letters. Two practice experimental blocks with 16 trials each were undertaken, the first with immediate feedback to represent correct or incorrect responses or if the response was too slow. The second provided summative feedback after the experiment about how many errors were made. The real experimental block was performed in the same manner as the second practice block, with 64 trials in total. Each stimulus was presented for up to two seconds. When a response key was pressed, it cleared the screen immediately for up to one second and followed with another stimulus until the finale.
Results
This study compared the RT of identifying global and local targets in a visual perception task. The results showed no statistically significant difference between the RT to global target (M = 738.94, SD = 103.9) and local target (M = 742.33, SD = 105.05), t(.260) = .783, p < .434) (see Table 1). Higher accuracy rates (%) were recorded in the local target (M = 92.76, SD = 7.97) compared to the global target (M = 91.13, SD = 8.68).
