The article takes a long look at the current situation facing medievalists (generally a word used to describe scholars who study Europe between the years 476 and 1492). On one hand, medievalists are struggling to prevent current white nationalists (think Charlottesville, 2017 and, Washington DC last January) from purposefully distorting medieval history for political ends. On the other side, they are facing accusations that medieval scholarship is itself complicit in various forms of institutional racism. 
Please read the article and video and review pp. 423-430 and 464-467 in your textbook. When you're ready, write a short essay in response to the following question: 
The field of medieval studies is facing two simultaneous controversies, both related to race. What are they? Are they related? Can the current political climate in the United States help us to understand them? 
And here's an extra little bit of direction: 
This assignment asks you to think about two different kinds of racism: militant white nationalism and structural/institutional racism. I've noticed with this assignment in previous semesters that students tend to be more comfortable writing about one of these or the other, and they tend to focus their answer on that one exclusively.
