Highlights
In 2016 Pokémon Go was the No. 1 mobile app in the US, and the craze was showing great promise for Nintendo to benefit substantially from its investment. Nintendo began to fund the project, spending many years supporting the development of the games that would become a worldwide sensation. The first Pokémon games - Pokémon Red and Green versions - came to the Nintendo Game Boy system in Japan on 27 February 1996, which was the fulfilment of its inventor, Satoshi Tajiri's dream, and allowed people of all ages to catch, train and trade 151 creatures and become a Pokémon Master.
It was later expansions in Pokémon's development that brought it to prominence in the global market. In just one week, following the release of Pokemon Go in the US on 16 July 2016, it became the most downloaded and top-grossing app on Android and iOS, with 21 million active users daily and 645 million social media Interactions within 10 days of its launch. At its peak, Pokémon Go generated twice as much daily usage as Facebook and had more active users than Twitter.
It was the unique way Pokemon Go was 'monetised' that excited investors. In an interview, an executive from the company behind the app said it made money, not only via in-app purchases but also when its users visit certain sponsored locations such as gyms and fast-food restaurants. Pokémon Go advertisers would be charged for every customer visiting a store, as confirmed by the app. According to one blogger it has been particularly powerful in the small restaurant business with 84% of Pokémon hunters having said they had visited spending an average of $11.30 on each visit. In fact, 71% of users visited a business close to a Poke Stop' (places in Pokémon Go that allow you to collect items such as eggs and Poke Balls and capture more Pokemon) which opened the doors to larger concerns. McDonald's, Starbucks and others are likely to expand the number of sponsored Poke Stops on their premises in a bid to increase footfall.
