Introduction
The concept of dating has evolved drastically throughout history. In the 18th century, people placed advertisements in newspapers, while in the 1900s there were declarations of ‘radio-love’. In the late 1950s, the rise of the Darpanet—the internet, as we know it today—became a new way to meet eligible singles, while now we look for companionship through handheld digital screens (Aishwarya N.K., 2020). The online medium of finding suitable partners has entered the Indian culture only recently in the 2010s. But the method with which Indian daters choose potential partners via online medium is less studied. One crucial factor that dominates in selecting a partner online is the bios on dating profiles.
When forming opinions, making judgments, or implementing decisions, individuals typically process positive and negative information on the target or object in question. Many authors, working from different perspectives, have documented the so-called negativity bias which stipulates that negative information carries greater weight or influence as compared to its equally valenced positive counterpart (Skowronski & Carlston, 1989; Taylor, 1991; Baumeister Bratslavsky, Finkenauer, & Vohs, 2001; Rozin & Royzman, 2001). The framing effect (Tversky & Kahneman, 1986) is a well-established manifestation of the negativity bias and is perhaps one of the most frequently studied violations of rational choice.
It posits that individuals' preferences can be reversed even when shown two logically equivalent frames. For example, sales of a product say milk is higher when it mentions 90% fat free as compared to when it advertises 10% fat. Like any other decision making framing effect does impact dating decisions. In a study conducted by Gad Sadd, Tripat Gill (2014) women yielded larger framing effects than men when evaluating prospective mates, and this robust sex difference was driven by their greater sensitivity to negative information.
Specifically, women exhibited larger framing effects for Earning Potential across all 3 Framing effects of bios on being swiped right Bhavika Bahutule four experimental conditions, in two of the conditions each for Intelligence, Ambition, and Kindness, while men yielded a larger effect in only one experimental condition for Attractive Face. However, both men and women report that traits reflecting warmth, kindness, responsiveness, and trustworthiness are the primary traits they look for in a romantic partner (Buss & Barnes, 1986; Jensen-Campbell,Graziano, & West, 1995; Regan & Berscheid, 1997; Stewart, Stinnett, & Rosenfeld, 2000). Some research has explored the trade-offs between physical attractiveness and responsiveness during dating decisions and has consistently found that those looking for a serious romantic partner (vs. a casual sex partner) tend to prioritize responsiveness over physical attractiveness (Fletcher, Tither, O’Loughlin, Friesen, & Overall, 2004; Urbaniak & Kilmann, 2003) In accordance with the general guidelines of Sexual Strategies Theory (Buss & Schmitt, 1993), the sex differences in framing effects became stronger when evaluating short-term mates as compared to long term ones.
This accords with the evolutionary logic of women's lesser keenness (and thus greater vigilance) in the context of short-term mating as compared to men (Gad Sadd, Tripat Gill, 2014). The behavioural prevalence assumption made on reading negative or positive bios of potential dating partners is also the concern of this study. In a health communication, a positively-framed image appeal links a disposition to a health-promoting behavior, e.g. ‘teens who abstain from sex are responsible’. With this frame, the speaker reveals an assumption that abstinence is not common among teens. If abstinence were common, it would not merit a dispositional statement. In contrast, a negatively-framed image appeal links a disposition to a health-risk behavior. e.g. ‘teens who have sex are irresponsible’. With this frame, the speaker reveals an assumption that sexual activity is not common among teens.
Thus, the different frames lead to much different inferences about the speaker’s normative beliefs. The positive frame suggests an assumption that healthy behavior is uncommon, whereas the negative frame suggests an assumption that unhealthy behavior is uncommon (Anne Stuart, Hart Blanton, 2002). The main study found only mixed support for this prediction: Although those in the positive-frame condition were more willing to have unprotected 4 Framing effects of bios on being swiped right Bhavika Bahutule sex than those in the negative-frame condition, there was little evidence that this effect was influenced by changes in prevalence estimation. This lack of evidence might encourage the continued use of positively-framed image appeals.
To the contrary, however, there is still reason to remain cautious. Drawing a parallel to the topic under consideration, it becomes of utmost importance to judge the belief of participants in the truthfulness of the bios declared in the profile. Lisa Guo, Jennifer S. Trueblood, and Adele Diederich (2016) in their research studied how time pressure weakens or strengthens framing effects while making risky decisions. participants in Experiment showed risk-averse behavior when presented with a gain frame and risk-seeking behavior when presented with a loss frame, in accordance with the standard framing effect. The results were also supported by traditional and Bayesian statistical tests and further showed increment in framing effects. In the online dating context the time taken to assess profiles depends solely on individuals. However the time in the experiment must be accounted for either by noting the response time or presenting stimulus for different time intervals in case time plays a factor in framing effect.
