How is what is considered work dependent on one’s social position? How is this changing? You should analyse both the changing nature of daily tasks defined as work (care work, office jobs, emotional labour, remote work, etc) as well as how one’s identity affects their relationship with work. 

This could include gender, sexual orientation, immigration status, race, indigenous background, class status, age, and other factors. 

Possible issues to look at: the rise or precarity and underemployment, emotional labour, outsourcing and the internationalisation of supply chains, the decline of industrial jobs in developed countries, care work and unpaid labour within the home, racialized hiring practices, the “gig” economy and platform capitalism, technology and automation, and many more issues. Remember to relate these broader trends to specific demographic groups. 

For this assignment, you are expected and required to do independent research to support your paper’s arguments. In addition to the readings in the syllabus, you are required to source at least 5 of your own. As with the second assignment, lectures should not be cited. 

In-text references and direct quotations are included in the word count. Each work you cite, using in-text referencing with page numbers – for example (Willis 2004: 9) – will only use up two to three words from your word allocation of 2000 (and remember you can go up to 10% over or under the word count before you are penalised marks). 

You are expected to provide a reference list at the end of the essay. However, the reference list is not included in the word count.
