Specific Task:
Students are required to select and answer one (1) of the essay questions listed below. It is acceptable to narrow the focus of any of the questions to keep the essay manageable, or to concentrate on a particular aspect of the topic that interests you, but you should articulate how you define or interpret the question in your introduction.
Most of the questions will need a sentence or two in the introduction to explain how you understand the limits of the question, but this should be kept as brief as possible to allow more space for your answer. Remember, key concepts you employ need to be defined, normally with a scholarly reference, if you use an argument about “judicial activism” or “polyarchy” for example, you need to define and reference the concept.
Criteria for evaluation:
• Your essay should have a clear argument, with evidence provided to support your point of view and rebut the contrary argument. This does not mean just giving your personal opinions and making sweeping assertions: if you believe you are correct, how can you demonstrate that?
• Your essay should analyse the empirical issues contained within the question (and analysis of how and why) rather than normative points (what should have or should be). You may have a normative view, and can present that at the beginning of the essay.
• Be sure to provide enough sources and evidence to support your arguments. Do not over-reference: consider using fewer “quality” references over many unscholarly ones.
The questions (read the question carefully, re-read it before you begin planning your response):
1. Consider the growth of executive power when compared to other branches of government. In what way has executive power increased in recent decades? What are the implications of this growth? How might this be constrained?
2. In what ways can and have executives increased their power relative to other branches of government? What means have they used to achieve this increase?
3. Consider the claim that unelected judges should not be allowed to make the laws of the land. Do you agree with this proposition? Discuss this statement with reference to the concepts of judicial review and parliamentary sovereignty. You may want to consider the comparative merits of elected judges in your response.
4. Compare and contrast two nations, one with a “supreme court” model and one with a “constitutional court” model. Why did these nations adopt the models they did? What are the implications for each of their choice?
5. Write an evaluation of the comparative merits and limits of uncodified constitutions. Given the relative merits of them, why are they not more popular?
6. “Legislatures are ineffective policy-making institutions because they are too adversarial and dominated by party politics.” Discuss this statement with reference to a democratic nation of your choice. Use specific examples to illustrate your arguments.
7. Consider the origins, history and development of “upper houses”. Are these still relevant today? Why are they/why not? Consider case examples of jurisdictions with and without upper houses in your analysis.
8. Consider the role and functions of legislatures in authoritarian regimes. Should we take them seriously when considering the politics of those nations? If not, why not? If so, why so and with what implications?
9. Choosing a nation of your choice to ask: Has the power of the media as a check on state power grown in recent decades as a function of its role as a “fourth estate”? What constraints on the role of the media as a check on state power are there today in this nation?
10. Choose two dissimilar nations. In what way is the political function of the media in each nation (a) similar and (b) different? What explains (a) and (b)?
11. Using a case study of your choice (a political issue or topic in a specific nation) employ concepts of reinforcement, agenda-setting, framing, and priming to analyse the political communication of the case.
12. Has the rise of social media made the world more democratic? Why/why not?
13. Are parties “essential” for the modern government? If so, why so? If not, why not? What are the implications of your answer for the conduct of politics?
14. How donations transition from single or dominant party systems to multi-party systems?
15. How do donations move from multi-party systems to single or dominant party systems?
16. Are interest groups a positive or negative feature of democratic practice and policymaking? Consider pluralism and other theories as part of this analysis.
17. Which is the most effective type of organisation for an individual to join if they want to maximise their political impact: a political party, an interest group, or a social movement? Why?
