Draw two tripeptides as two antiparallel β-strands. In the first tripeptide make the central residue an aromatic amino acid. In the second tripeptide make the central residue a hydrophilic amino acid. Draw the other residues as alanines. Draw any ionisable groups in their ionisation state assuming pH 7 and the peptide bonds as trans.

In addition to this drawing:

a) Name the central two residues with their full amino acid name.

b) Include all expected hydrogen bonds assuming the two tripeptides are part of a β-sheet, mark the donor atom (D) and the acceptor atom (A) of the hydrogen bonds. 

c) If these hydrogen bonds were considered “strong”, what distance between the donor and acceptor atoms would you expect?

d) Mark one of the peptide bonds in the drawing. What is the expected dihedral angle for this peptide bond?

e) For the aromatic residue mark the two bonds where we observe free rotation for the dihedral angles φ (phi) and ψ (psi). Label and mark the bond assigned to φ and the bond assigned to ψ.

f) What value (magnitude and sign) do you expect for φ and ψ in an antiparallel β-sheet?
