Unfortunately, universities are focusing their education on technical on the expense of work environment realities. The shock resulting from facing the realities, can sometimes reshape the expectation, which is the good scenario, while, sometimes quitting the career is a way to escape from the reality, unfortunately.

According to Stephen Covey’s circles, the bigger the concerns circle, the more reactive is the person to the situation, while proactive people tends to increase the influence and control circles in order to focus their energy and drive things. In order to increase the awareness graduates and junior employees to be proactive and control things, this research is taking place to tackle the determinants of career success, from employees’ perspectives. The determinants’ relationship with career success will be tested. The research will be a good experience sharing opportunity for market experts to guide juniors and help them sitting more realistic expectations.

The Middle East, and as per Hofsted’s Cultural Dimensions, there are many close scores between the countries in this region. In this paper, we will be addressing the determinants of career success particularly in this area of the world. As these countries are mainly developing countries, we found few articles studying this region in terms of employees’ career advancements. Plus, this region has a different mix of cultures and it has residents coming from different parts of the world bringing their own original culture inputs to the middle eastern mix.

Research Problems

Career success is the main ultimate goal for employees. However, university graduates and entry-level employees, and sometimes mid-career-level employees, lack the guidance to achieve career success. Universities are still not focusing a lot in this, especially in non-business colleges. With different study majors available nowadays, people from all specialties need to understand these determinants in order to proceed in their career successfully. In a summary, this paper will focus on the following problems:

  • The lack of awareness regarding determinants of career success, among recent university graduates and entry-level employees in the Middle East
  • The increasing concerns about individual’s control over career success in the Middle East.

Research Objectives

This paper aims to develop a better understanding of career success determinants in the Middle East. The objectives of the research are summarized as the following:

  • Share different views of work-related behaviors used to achieve a progress in careers in the Middle East
  • Identify factors influencing career success in the Middle East.
  • Provide employee with a career guide to help them grow.
  • Provide managers with insights on how to retain potential employees through helping them to succeed.
