Highlights
You are hired as organizational behavior consultants for XYZ Corporation, a global technology company that provides a range of software and hardware solutions for various industries. The company has over 10,000 employees, including engineers, developers, marketers, and customer support personnel. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the company shifted to remote work for all employees since March 2020.
However, with the increasing availability of vaccines, declining COVID-19 cases, and concerns around decreasing productivity, the company's leadership has decided to return to in-person work starting in the fall of 2023. As consultants, your task is to develop a plan to influence workers to return to in-person work. Many other companies have been in the news for losing employees after announcing a plan to return to the office. XYZ Corporation is hiring you to prevent a mass resignation from their employees when they announce a return to the office.
TheĀ goals are to increase employee retention (compared to other companies who have announced a return to the office) and to minimize a decrease in overall performance during the transition. Your plan will review the challenges experienced by companies who have already tried returning to the office as a way to identify existing concerns.
The executive that hired you at XYZ Corporation has suggested that maybe it would be helpful to include a plan for a communication training initiative to improve communication throughout the organization as physical logistics shift back to the office. It is up to you to decide if this is a feasible suggestion (at which point you should include it in your plan) or not (at which point you should explain why you did NOT create one).
You will be working with a team of HR managers, communication specialists, and department managers who will provide input and support for your initiatives. You will have access to data on employee preferences and concerns, as well as the company's communication practices and protocols.
Goals 1 and 2: Influencing Workers to Return to In-Person Work While Minimizing Efficiency Loss Conduct general research to determine why workers are hesitant to return to in-person work. XYZ Corporation does not want to do an internal employee survey at this time because it does not want to tip off employees and possibly scare them into looking for other jobs. Analyze your research results to identify key potential factors contributing to employees' general reluctance to return to in person work. Apply organizational behavior theories, concepts, and/or models to the issues you identify. Use the textbook as well as the added resources throughout your weekly modules. PLUS identify (and cite) at least 3 other valid external sources on your own. Develop a plan to influence workers to return to in-person work, and include specific verbiage and messaging that should be communicated to the employees of XYZ Corporation.
The company hired you as organization behavior consultants because they need help figuring out how to motivate their employees to "want" to return to the office. Dig back all the way to Chapter 1 and move forward from there. Do not be vague...XYZ is paying you to tell them how to specifically word the messaging and influence the communication styling to their employees. Your plan should be based on your research analysis and the OB theories, concepts, and/or models you have learned and applied above. Your report should include several possible strategies for XYZ Corporation to consider (no less than the number of individuals working on the report).... ranked in order of highest likely impact. Possible
Goal3: Design a Communication Training Initiative (or not) Analyze the current communication processes in the organization (you can get creative here, assuming the frequency and quality of communication between employees, and between employees and management).
It is safe to assume that due to the nature of remote work, email and virtual meetings are highly utilized methods of communication. Identify existing potential communication challenges that could be addressed through training, such as miscommunication, lack of feedback, or poor conflict resolution skills. As XYZ Corporation goes through the change of returning to in person work, will it benefit the organization to also implement a plan to address (and improve) communication challenges? If no, give a detailed summary of why it is not a feasible endeavor during the change. If yes, share a plan that XYZ could adopt to improve communication across the organization. Again, apply organizational behavior theories and concepts to the issues (regardless of whether your answer is yes or no).
Develop an outline for a communication training initiative to improve communication throughout the organization. Your initiative should be based on the analysis and theories you have applied. In your written report present your findings, your plan to influence workers to return to in-person work, and communication training initiative suggestions.
