Background and Critique

The brochure we are critiquing is a document produced by the International Labour Organisation promoting equality in the workplace. Much more than before employers are prioritising diversity in their workplace as it makes a better environment to work in but, more than anything else; diversity does the right thing for humanity. The brochure refers to the discrimination that is being done based on gender, race and ability. Discrimination should have been eradicated from the society by now but unfortunately it is still being practiced in some workplaces.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) is a United Nations agency, formed in 1919, in order to “reflect the belief that universal and lasting peace can be accomplished only if it is based on social justice.” (ILO, 2020) The International Labour Organisation works to ensure that governments, employers and employees are working together to create progressive and safe working environments. The brochure offers ‘ideas’ on how to promote gender equality in the office, as well as a general healthy workplace environment.

The targeted audience of the brochure is mainly the people who work in the office. As it’s a place where people carry out the daily work of their business so its highly important to target such audiences and spread the message. The language of the brochure supports this, as the words used are professional; although sometimes inaccessible. The language is assertive, but becomes unnecessarily complicated to comprehend in some parts. Given the universal message, it would be helpful to ensure that all members of the workplace can understand the intentions of the document. The author should also be careful when narrowing gender down to just ‘women and men.’ In a document that is made to highlight inequality, it would be best to use the term, ‘all genders.’

Rhetorically the words in brochure are not being used well. The rhetoric structure of brochure does not help people to better analyse it. The brochure also seems to be using too colourful schemes to present a serious message. It has the potential to grab eyeballs of the audience but engaging for long and digging the deeper meaning is something could have easily been more. Therefore, the tone and oration of the brochure should be focused on particular topics, should not have been tried to cover too many topics in single brochure. (Catherine Verniers, 2018)

The brochure can also be improved in a visual sense; as although colour co-ordination helps the reader distinguish separate parts of the brochure, the overall layout is clunky and does not make for smooth, uninterrupted reading. The document reads as four separate parts rather than an homogenous, balanced text. The repetition of the “Gender Equality, Take Action” subheading and the large piece of text that accompanies it seems unnecessary and interrupts the visual flow of the document. This can be replaced with more information or images that are associated with the text.

Proposed Methods

In order to measure the audiences’ reactions to the brochure, we will conduct two audience analysis tests; the Usability Method and The Protocol Method. These methods will focus on text and aesthetics respectively, as the Usability Method will help determine ease of understanding and the Protocol method will aide in adjusting minor visual elements in order to create a more enjoyable reading experience.

We will first utilise the Usability Method in order to determine how audiences interact with and absorb the information presented in the document. There are two pillars of usability; understandability and the ease of application of the information presented, (Marnell, 2008) and thus

our first survey will focus on these two vital elements. The Usability Method will allow us to focus on the usefulness of the visual elements in aiding understanding, as well as measuring the textual advice presented on it’s ease of application. The Usability Method is best for this as participants must interact with the document to find specific information; thus highlighting how accessible the text is in it’s understandability and information absorption.

We will also utilise methods that gauge responsiveness and general positive or negative reactions using the Protocol Method, as this allows us to record our subject’s immediate impressions of the brochure and consolidate findings found in the first method. The Protocol Analysis gives researchers insight into the audiences by using the subject’s 'own verbal reports as data’ (Ericsson, Simon, 1984), highlighting the audience’s cognitive processes whilst interacting with a document. This shows us how audiences instinctively interact with a text and may highlight usability flaws such as confusing layout, inaccessible language or poor composition that hinder’s readers interactions with the text. The Protocol Method is best for pointing out these flaws as subjects verbally document their natural ‘train of thought’ when interacting with the brochure; thus giving insight into any immediate negative experiences which is exceptionally important given the need for effective communication in more compact texts such as the brochure.
