Highlights
Structure of the Research Proposal
The planning component of the project and the development of the proposal are the creative stages of the activity. It is during these phases of the project that the scene is set for the investigation. The reason for conducting the research, the hypotheses to be examined, the methodologies to be applied to the project, and the analyses and interpretation of the results will all be determined through reason and logic.
The proposal will become the template from which the project is implemented to achieve the aims and objectives of the investigation.
Project proposal
The purpose of the proposal is to develop a working plan for the project which will allow the proposed aim(s) and objectives of the project to be achieved. It is during the development of the proposal that the majority of decisions on the project are taken. The completion of the project itself is almost "mechanical" as the development of the proposal is followed as a design and specification document for the implementation of your project.
Examples of the types of decisions that the research proposal may address for the implementation of your project could be:
• What is the problem to be solved?
• Is a solution to the problem realistic?
• What do I want to achieve in the project?
• Am I working from a knowledge base or do I have to develop a theoretical context for the project?
• What is the history of the problem?
• Has the problem been solved by others either in the exact context or in a similar context?
• How will I set out to solve this problem?
• What methods have others used to solve similar problems?
• Are the methods which I will use to understand the problem both rigorous and valid?
• What outcomes would I expect to achieve from the approach that I am proposing to take?
• How much will the project cost in the implementation of the proposed approach to solving the problem?
• How long will the project take to complete according to the proposed methods?
• Have the objectives of the project been satisfactorily achieved?
• Was the problem solved with respect to the initial intent of the project?
• What further problems have been exposed, and what further projects need to be examined?
Objectives of the Project
An objective is something which you plan to achieve. The objectives of the project are the results of your efforts that you intend to attain or accomplish. An objective is something you will walk away with at the end of the project. For instance, objectives could be knowledge about a particular phenomenon or activity. The successful accomplishment of ALL the objectives will satisfy the requirement of the aim(s) of the project. Objectives are NOT tasks of the project (i.e. to conduct a survey) - that is a research task required for the project.
AIM: The aim of the project is to understand the key factors enabling passengers to use false identification and to explore current identification procedures to determine if they support the Situational Crime Prevention theory.
Objectives:
The objectives of the project will be to:
1. Develop an improved understanding of how domestic passengers are able to use false identities and to
2. Determine if current identification practices were consistent with Situational Crime Prevention Theory and reduced opportunities for crime.
