Assignment Details The Modern World
LTE ED
Description
For your final paper, I would like you to reflect on the changes in culture and worldview we have traced over the arc of this course, and to think about how this narrative, broadly speaking, leads us to, or can inform our perspective on, the sociopolitical situations we find ourselves in today.
Using at least 4-6 of our authors, as well as at least two of our broader sociocultural concepts like Romanticism, Modernity, Renaissance, Liberalism, Cosmopolitanism, trust in Reason, the search for Mechanistic explanations, Disenchantment, Blood & Soil Nationalism, Postmodernism, Existentialism, etc, I would like you to make connections between the historical developments we've concerned ourselves with in this course, and the contemporary sociopolitical landscape. How did we get from there to here? Do you see any parallels between these older modes of European thought and contemporary "Western" thought or political disagreement? Do you see the seeds being planted for any issues we're still dealing with to this day? Are there aspects of culture and ideology, political or not, that have clear roots in the authors we've looked at in this course?
What are some ways that understanding the authors in this course, and their ideas, can shed light on these modern problems? How does familiarizing oneself with the past, and with the progression of ideologies that lead to the present, enrich one's perspective for considering these problems?
Requirements
While the paper is largely open-ended, basic requirements for the essay include:
• identification of theme that is stated in an argumentative thesis; • at least three assigned figures/authors (meaning authors or directors of works we read or viewed) must be included in your analysis— and all cannot be from the same half of the course; • close readings of specific quotes from the example texts that develop relationships between them in order to support the thesis; • the use of appropriate quotation conventions to indicate material extracted from sources; • a length of at least six full pages and less than ten full pages; and, • an attempt to creatively engage the materials from class by finding innovative relationships among our many disparate texts." • No outside sources, please
All submitted papers, in adhering to the following formatting guidelines, should
• be six to 10pages in length; • be double-spaced; • be set to 12-point Times New Roman font; • have 1" margins; • include a header that has your name only; • have citations in any format (MLA, CMS, APA) with which you are comfortable; and • include a works cited page.
Grading Criteria
Your final essay is worth 200 points and will be graded according to this criteria.
Your essay will be downgraded if it
• only includes authors/figures that were assigned from within the same half of the course; • did not follow the formatting guidelines outlined above; • did not include proper in-line citations; • did not have a works cited page; • failed to demonstrate critical analysis and proof that the works were read; and/or • failed to meet the five page minimum requirement.
