Highlights
Task
One of the most important features of change management is that it involves people. Unfortunately, people often do not find change easy to deal with. In fact, in the face of change, humans experience physical reactions similar to a response to pain. In addition, previous experiences of change can affect how individuals respond to change in the future.
People also seem to deal with planned change and unplanned or unexpected change differently. If people plan change themselves, they seem to deal with it better than if a change is unplanned and occurs unexpectedly. This would appear to have something to do with having control over the change process. You will reflect on your own experiences of change and interrogate how your experience influences how you will likely go about a change management process.
By completing this discussion, you will be practicing the skills required to help you complete Assessment 1 which is a critical reflection about the nature and effects of planned and unplanned change.
Task
– Step 1: Consider these three questions:
How might your previous experiences of change impact on your anticipation and potential reaction to change?
In your experience, how do people react to planned change and unplanned change differently?
Why do they behave differently?
– Step 2: Post your responses to the three question
Purpose Week 2 – 100 to 120 words
This discussion requires you to consider the psychological impact of change on people, applying some of the ideas that are presented this week. It also starts our journey into looking at effective leadership in change management.
This discussion is essential to Assessment 2, where you will look at preparing for change management in an organisation.
In answering the first question, below, you can draw, initially, on your own experience of change, and compare it with what you are reading about the psychology of change.
In the second question, you might be able to extrapolate from the first quite easily. But check your thoughts with what the literature says before writing your response.
Task
– Step 1: Consider your response to the following two questions:
Why do people find it difficult to manage change?
Why is this important in leading change in organisations?
– Step 2: Post your answers.
Allow 15 minutes to complete the first part of this discussion.
