The Myth of Reverse Racism
The United States has had a long history associated with racism. While this issue has not completely disappeared, the form that racism takes on is constantly growing and evolving. Whether it's an altercation with an angry customer or brutalization from the police, racism can be found in many forms. Over the years, black, indigenous, and people of color have found ways to collaborate to combat racism. They’ve created organizations, such as the NAACP, and have created government policies such as affirmative action. As a result, many feel as though minority-exclusive organizations and policies are acts of reverse racism, however, America’s extensive racist history contradicts just that, because reverse racism does not and has never existed.According to the Oxford Dictionary, racism is any type of “prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one’s race is superior,”. Merriam-Webster defines racism as “a doctrine or political program based on the assumption of racism and designed to execute its principles.” The first interprets racism as an individual issue, instead of a systemic one, when, in actuality, racism goes beyond personal prejudices. Institutionalized, or systemic, racism is a term that describes the role that racism plays in the institutions that run this country. Today, when many people discuss racism in regards to reverse racism, they refer to the personal definition of racism, unwittingly referring to discrimination, which is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or attributes. However, the racist state of our country can be best described by the institutional definition of racism. Anyone can be discriminatory, however, white people are not disadvantaged by the racist systems that run our country, therefore they are not negatively affected by racism. Many who are unfamiliar with the term "reverse racism" believe that reverse racism is any time that minorities are racist against white people, however, this is not the case. Reverse racism is a term used to portray organizations such as Affirmative Action and Black Lives Matter as racist or anti-white. However, these programs are not meant to be discriminatory toward white people but instead are designed to correct imbalances created by racism in the United States and create comfortable spaces for BIPOC.
Affirmative action policies are policies where an institution or organization actively
engages in efforts to improve opportunities for minorities in America. Their policies are mainly utilized in healthcare and higher education. Affirmative action regarding higher education refers to admission policies that help provide equal access to education for widely underrepresented minorities. Affirmative action ensures that universities consider applicants of all races and promotes diversity. This policy is not discriminatory towards white people because it does not allow colleges to accept minority students solely based on their race, but it ensures that colleges consider and include qualified minority students who may have been disregarded because of their race. Because white people already obtain a majority, including qualified students of other races does not disadvantage white students if they are just as qualified.simply create safe and comfortable spaces that encourage people of color to embrace their race and discuss issues that affect them in their lives as BIPOC. In regards to their race, white people have never needed a designated space to gather amongst themselves, because historically, every space is a safe space for white people. Being white is widely seen as the standard of acceptability. If minorities felt safe voicing their opinions elsewhere, these organizations wouldn't be necessary. For example, the NAACP was founded to ensure equality of rights to all persons and to eliminate racial discrimination. The mission of the NAACP is not to exclude white people, but to support the inclusion of all people.
