ESSAY TIPS

Here are some prompts that may help you start thinking about the essay and how you will respond. Please note that they are by no means exhaustive, and are only a rough guide to help you start freewriting:

• Why does Golde use the phrase “moral compass?” What does this term mean? Understanding this concept is central for your response, so spend time thinking about what Golde means, and how the idea of an over-arching moral compass and how this is shaped by a set of principles and values. Be sure to spend time thinking about every idea Golde advances in her short paper, not just the ones explicitly mentioned in this worksheet.

• What ethical breaches, ethical debates, and ethical issues have been important in the history of your field? What ethical debates, risks, and challenges currently face those working in your field? What future issues are likely to emerge in your field that will be fraught with ethical significance? How do these considerations shape the moral compass that you bring to your own research? How do you understand the responsibilities of researchers in your field? How do you understand the responsibilities of stewardship? What institutions and associations exist in (and beyond) your field to promote such responsibilities at a collective level?

• What does the National Statement say about “beneficence”, and how does this relate to your duties as a steward of the field? How does your field contribute to the betterment of society, and when has it failed in this mission? Why is it important that work in your field continue, and what misdeeds should researchers in your field not forget?

ESSAY PURPOSE

This essay has three (3) main purposes:

1) To help you become more familiar with the National Statement and related research integrity codes.

The National Statement is an important document that provides a framework against which professional research activity in this country should take place. As part of your research training, we want you to become familiar with this document, irrespective of whether or not you will apply for ethics in the MRes. You should also show evidence of engaging with other research codes that are related to your field.

2) To start generating ideas that can be used in the impact statement for your Written Thesis Proposal (A3).

All funded research needs to be justified in terms of its potential impact. You will need to do this in your Written Thesis Proposal (RD2 Assessment 3), and verbally in your POP. This short essay is not the same as your Impact Statement, but it provides a ground of ideas that you will be able to draw on later. By completing this task and receiving feedback, you have a chance to generate and refine ideas for use in other important contexts.

3) To cultivate your ability to think in moral and ethical terms, both about your own project and about research as a public good.

As a researcher, there will be times when you have to defend your work and the work of your colleagues. You have the privilege of being able to create knowledge, which carries with it a weighty responsibility to act in the public good. As such, we want you to think of yourself not merely as researchers, but as citizens who are willing to defend the public value of research – as stewards of your field, and stewards of the academy more broadly. You must always be ready and willing to justify your work in moral and ethical terms.
